A child is snatched from the Anchorage bus station. Clues developed during the search suggest she's being held by a pedophile and his ex-con buddy, and that they are hatching a plot to blow up the trans-Alaska pipeline. By Mom of Two Kids, One Dog, No Sanity Let me preface this review with stating I love action and adventure books. Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, and Dan Brown are some of my favorite authors. Ron Dalby is a very new author, but I figured I would give the book a chance because it popped up in my recommendations. Best decision ever – – I read this monster book in one day and only reluctantly put it down for meals. This has everything – – state troopers with a sense of humor, fish and game wardens with a grin, pipeline workers with quick wits and a love of bourbon, bad guys, good guys, some we're not real certain of, and the absolute BEST helicopter ride in frigid death defying conditions I've ever read. This author's descriptions are so incredible I finally skipped to the end of the book just to read his bio, and, well, it's exactly what you would expect for anyone who could write about the details this author does. Just --try this book out. You won't be disappointed.So--a preface about this novel: three disgruntled men decide they're going to blow up the the pipeline in Alaska in the early 90s. One of the ex-cons is a pedophile and we realize early on, also most likely a murderer who has nothing to lose. But there are some wonderful heroes in this book as well – – helicopter pilots, Alaska State troopers, Alaska fish and game officers, and even a good guy (er--girl) reporter. Loved almost everything about this work.Well, let me add an exception to that statement: I didn't love the fact that when I searched for other books by this author, I could only find Alaska travel guides. Here's hoping Dalby writes another work of fiction very soon!

It's fiction that reads like a documentary, and that's because it is. It's not just a well-paced action story, the detail brings the characters and Alaska to life. Because it's so well-written, readers don't know what will/won't happen to one of the main characters until it does. Because of my personal history with small plane medical rescues and brave and bold pilots I can validate that Ron wrote truth in fiction.

The author draws his characters from a pallet so colorful you can actually picture each one in your mind. From the young victims, to the bad guys, to the State Troopers, FWP and civilians...each one has their own distinct personality that pulls you in to the adventure and drama during a nine month period in the Alaskan wilderness (including the pipeline).I found it difficult to put the book down, but when I did, I couldn't wait to get back to it.I am amazed that this is Ron's first attempt at a novel, and I hope it won't be his last!Lori Slipiec
