By Nuxxy Complex, detailed, multifaceted science fiction on a galactic scale. The story concludes with a massive bang. This is not basic sci-fi. This is dark, detailed, intriguing and complicated science fiction written by some of the best.If you want a story that really takes you deep, start with the first book in this trilogy and read all three. Priests of Mars, Lords of Mars, Gods of Mars. Fantastic stuff!

By Derek Hutchinson The final installment in this trilogy is amazing. It follows Archmagos Kotov and the Speranza exploration fleet into the far reaches of the galaxy where the astronomicon can't reach, essentially leaving the light of the emperor. The revelation of Telok repurposing a necron artefact and wanting to destroy Mars and Terra and rebuild the imperium with it was an unexpected shock, you knew something was going to be wrong with the meeting of him, but not that insanely bad. The few pages where it is alluded to the Void Dragon actually being entombed somewhere on Mars was extremely well written. The Galatea and Linya storyline was a huge pleasure to read to its conclusion, along with the bondsman and how they evolved from the beginning of this whole story. The black templars and the eldar were very well written in how they both viewed each other after Telok intentions were revealed. We need more books or storylines about situations like that. The Cadian regiment and the Titan legios were the most fleshed out in this series next to the Archmagos' and to me came off as the heroes of the book as they seemed to have had the more meaningful losses and challenges of all the characters in the book.

Completes The Downward Trajectory By Cypher Some of my review echoes the points raised by JPS but I will elaborate on other points and, unlike JPS, reveal some spoilers (with warnings) to demonstrate some of the significant failings of this final book. What began in the first book so imaginatively with a great quest and richly drawn characters became overblown and repetitive in the second. It is immensely disappointing to see McNeill conclude the series by compounding all of the errors in the second book rather than holding to the virtues of the first. The consequences of Telok's villainy (stated on the back cover so not a spoiler) are so significant that it ramps up the narrative to hysterical extremes. This involves very high powered characters (Archmagos plural, a saint, the god-level spirit of the Speranza, a farseer etc) fighting in such extreme environments as a collapsing planet (for the third time), an infoverse and the strands of time itself that it causes the reader to be somewhat detached. Just to make it worse there are plot holes the size of black holes ready to suck this book into oblivion. The reason I do not rank this at 1 star is due to the quality of some of the descriptions including the shipboard battles, a new templum, the memorable Tindalosi (although lifting a Lovecraft name seems unnecessary) and the Eldar-Black Templar interactions.*Spoilers*Telok is the worst kind of Dr Evil adversary. He brings a powerful group of enemies down to the planet to see his wonder weapon then, in cliched style, states the 40k version of 'No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die.' Which of course they do not and, armed with the knowledge of his plan, attempt to stop him.To make this all the more illogical, Telok effectively controls Galatea. Galatea is regularly described as being in control of Speranza's systems and able to remove life support throughout the ship. In one stroke Galatea can remove all of the Imperial Guard and, by additionally altering gravity, nullify the Adeptus Mechanicus other than the Legio. But instead Galatea comes down to the planet of Exnihlio, leaving Speranza in the control of Telok's adversaries, to pretend to attack Telok but instead to gloat that Galatea and Telok are on the same side. So now we have a second gloating scene but this one is even more irrational as Telok and Galatea now return to Speranza to try to take control over the ship that they already had control over but had temporarily relinquished! Of course in trying to retake control they still do not vent life out into space as they should but instead send endless waves of those crystalline creatures that were getting pretty tedious in the second book. There was also too much foreshadowing in the book too - the ability of Linya to overcome Galatea never seemed in doubt, Bielanna was too heavily portrayed as a tragic character who would die on this mission and the ascension of Locke was unconvincing (where were his teachings and new creed) and was seemingly propelled only by narrative necessity. The whole need for the Ark Mechanicus as a means to return to Mars also seemed unnecessary too. The Breath of The Gods could start and unmake star systems whilst Telok had already created a vast planet-wide industry from it. He only needed a warp capable craft for the Breath of the Gods to overawe the Mechanicus which he must have been capable of making (he arrived in a fleet of them already). Why would appearing in the Ark have made any difference against all of the defences of Mars if the intent was to fight his way in?I also found the very last page confusing about how Telok/ Galatea could have survived but actually was past caring. I will not be buying any more if this series is superannuated.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Let it be a profound discussion for your heart By savingsinseconds Strobel’s case for hope aligns with his concept of doubt. Rather than shushing the Christian who struggles with faith, Strobel allows for questions under an intellectual umbrella. The first focus in this regard was the argument that Jesus’ resurrection was REAL. By providing secular accounts as well as biblical evidence, Strobel’s interview was a valid presentation of the Christian belief. His points are presented in preachable acronyms, which makes it perfect for a pastor’s library. There were enough personal stories to make the book interesting, yet it wasn’t a memoir. There were a few times that I wished he told more about the end of each person’s story, but it probably wasn’t relevant to his point. The book is small enough to finish in an hour or two, but the ideas will stay with you for much longer. I received this book to review; opinions shared are mine.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. things are always so much better in my life By Debi @2014 & Beyond HOPE - I believe when we have hope, we have faith - faith in God. According to bestselling Christian author, Lee Strobel, hope is more than wishful thinking, blind optimism, or hopeful dreams, and our true source of "living hope" is the biblical hope that is found in Jesus Christ. Each day, we are bombarded by images of conflict, struggle, and despair. In our 24/7-news cycle that seems to always focus on the negative, it can be challenging to carve out space where we can focus on life's blessings and find hope. But what is hope, and how can we find it in an often hopeless world?"Hope is the inextinguishable flicker God ignites in our souls to keep us believing in the prevailing power of His light even when we are surrounded by utter darkness."Strobel reminds us that biblical hope is the confident expectation that God is willing and able to fulfill the promises He has made to those who trust Him. The Bible refers to this as "living hope". In Lamentations 3:21-23, we are reminded that we can live with hope because even though we fail God, fail our families, and fail ourselves, God's compassion is a renewable resource that is fresh and available every day because He is willing to offer us a new start. To read and reflect on the Gospel accounts of Jesus, we realize that he was a big source of hope. He lived a life that showed others the hope that they could find greater meaning and purpose in their lives. He spread tangible hope as he healed broken hearts and diseased bodies of countless people. He promised a hope-filled existence in heaven for eternity for those who would trust and follow him. This is a very quick but insightful book that I thought I would breeze through for purposes of this review. However, at this point in my life, as a Christian I do have hope, but sometimes I can have that wishful thinking or blind optimism hope. When I have hope in God, knowing He is willing and able to lead the way, things are always so much better in my life.I love that at the end of this book there's a 30-day journal for us to learn more about hope. We will begin the 30-day journey tomorrow - we need to delve deeper into the topic of hope right now, and I know we can learn so much more!Lee Strobel has already helped millions delve deeper into their faith and investigate the how and the why of what they believe. His cases for a creator, Christ, and faith are air-tight and convincing to even the most stalwart skeptic, which is why The Case for Hope is sure to inspire and ignite hope in the hearts of those who thought they were without it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Case for Hope By Jon Becker I have read several of Lee Strobel’s “The Case for…” books with great interest and enjoyment. I even led a Book Study in our small group on “The Case for Faith,” a book that I have read several times. “The Case for Christ” is a must-read for anyone who doubts the existence of Jesus Christ or doubts that He was indeed the Son of God.As a math teacher, I am fascinated by science and thoroughly enjoyed Strobel’s “The Case for a Creator,” a detailed and well-researched book that delves deep into the scientific mysteries of our universe and points squarely to the inarguable fact that an intelligent designer must have created the universe.Having said that, I was surprised (and slightly disappointed) when I received “The Case for Hope.” In hindsight, I now realize that I was expecting another scholarly, well-researched book, similar to the three aforementioned books. While this book is an interesting (albeit short) read, it does not carry the same intellectual weight as his earlier works. It It strings together a series of anecdotes about people who put their hope in Christ. There is an interesting section that talks about doubt-making clear that doubt is not a sin, and that many strong believers sometimes experience doubt. I definitely appreciated that section. But overall, my expectations were too high, and I felt let down.“The Case for Hope” is a “gift book,” the kind that you might give to someone as a graduation gift or as a stocking stuffer at Christmas (yes, it would fit in a stocking). There is nothing inherently wrong with this, but it simply wasn’t what I expected it to be.DISCLAIMER: I received a free copy of this book from BookLookBloggers.com in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. The opinions expressed here are solely my own.

It has so much, AI, romance, war, aliens, spaceships, intense human relationships and cats, did I mention the cats.I have just spotted book 3's release date and it can't come soon enough for me.Thank you for the ride.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Defying The Prophet By Clare O'Beara Second in the Sentience Trilogy, which began with Storm Clouds Gathering. This is a rip-roaring space battle from quite early on, as human-settled planets oppose one another in a war based on economies and corruption. The planets have been given names reminiscent of American states - Ginia, Bama, Tensee and so on - while other famous names crop up in humorous references. The sides have adopted the names Yankees and Confederates. The sad loss of life could have perhaps been avoided, but a sentient biocomputer named Halbert and his 'owner' Dietrich have been manipulating the forces to war. However the Raknii which are like large cats or lions, are invading the space lanes and determined to subdue this new human prey. They don't understand how humans don't concede the battle once Raknii have control of a planet's space, but continue fighting on the ground with a bewildering array of weaponry. A prophecy concerning this leonine race may be revealing itself. The issues that bothered me in the first book are addressed, with women on an equal footing with men in the fight for their civilisation. While Halbert is ever more manipulative we finally see Dietrich getting out and meeting people, and he explains why he hasn't been spending his great wealth on entertaining ladies. There is a strong female character for us to follow, as Diet gets to know her, and it looks like Halbert will be walking around too by the next book.Author Gibson Michaels has clearly enjoyed creating this account of space wars and sneaky computers, of predatory cats and all-too human couples. Anyone who likes space opera, cats or SF on a grand scale, should give Defying The Prophet a try. You may do better to read the first book first - I don't think it's absolutely necessary but you'll be missing out on background and a lot of great reading if you don't.

Amazing Second Volume By Kindle Customer I have been a fan of this author for a long time and I was pleased to see a new episode in the adventures of Julie Thomas. This is a complex, conflicted character and the references she makes to herself, to be the "Strong Julie", really set this character apart from others in the genre. She isn't some Amazon war princess or hardened soldier, but she is capable of rising to the occasion and doing the hard things necessary to survive, but without sacrificing her humanity. I don't want to give any spoilers, but the author did a magnificent job of drawing me right into the story and even though this is technically a short story it packs enough punch to be satisfying. But...the ending does leave you hungry for more. I cannot wait.

Twelve year old Jack Mills lives at 5 Winell Road and probably has the world's weirdest neighbours. Like freakishly weird. And to top it off, he lives with Mum (nosy, interfering, a hideous cook) and Dad (unsuccessful inventor of the Camera Belt and Self-Closing Window). All in all, it's a boring, embarrassing, dead-end place to live. So when Jack arrives home from school one day, a close shave with a UFO is the last thing he expects. But the fact it doesn't abduct him, and that no one else - not even Mum - sees the gigantic flying saucer hovering over the street, adds a whole new layer of strange. Soon after, an alien encounter threatens Jack's life and he becomes embroiled in a galaxy-saving mission. With the assistance of his new neighbour, frighteningly tall Roxy Fox, he discovers Winell Road is hiding secrets - secrets Jack might wish he'd never uncovered.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Twisty Tale of SciFi and Secrets By knightsofkilbourne Twelve-year-old Jack Mills is bored. He lives on Winell Road, the most boring street imaginable, with his boring parents, Mum (nosy and a horrible cook) and Dad (an inventor of totally useless gadgets), and a collection of odd-ball yet boring neighbors. He’s bored, that is, until the day the glowing, silvery spaceship shows up overhead. Jack manages to escape being abducted by the alien craft, but he soon comes to the realization that he’s the only one who has actually seen it. His close encounter turns even more bizarre when Jack finds himself involved in a desperate mission to recover a stolen piece of alien technology, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance.Kate Foster’s WINELL ROAD—BENEATH THE SURFACE flawlessly combines fantastical science fiction, heart-pounding adventure, sinister mystery, and a large helping of humor. Foster has crafted a charming and inventive MG novel that will keep readers of all ages turning the pages as breathlessly as did I. I can’t reveal much of the story itself without dealing out major spoilers, so suffice it to say Foster’s characterizations are spot-on, her scenes both evocative and hair-raising, and her plot twists marvelously handled. For WINELL ROAD is ultimately a story of secrets, and Jack’s efforts to unravel them in order to save himself, his family, his new friend Roxy, and just possibly the galaxy from the clutches of a host of aliens who have descended on Winell Road, the most boring place in the known universe.Jack is an engaging protagonist--clever, spunky, loyal, and determined, yet filled with all the self-doubts, foibles, and questions lurking in every twelve-year-old boy. In Jack, Kate Foster achieves a marvelous MG voice that impels the reader on to follow along on his quest to save the galaxy. And although the reader may think s/he see’s things that Jack doesn’t and guess the final plot twist, that twist will leave even the most jaded gasping in surprise and wanting more of Jack’s adventures.WINELL ROAD—BENEATH THE SURFACE is an excellent first outing from Kate Foster. It ticked all my boxes nicely—voice, characterization and plotting--and I anticipate her next venture, hopefully back into the world of Jack and his friends, will be better still.

Exciting Sci-Fi Adventure By Rebecca carpenter When Jack has a close encounter with a spaceship on Winell Road, the world as he knows it is flipped upside down and turned inside out. Then the Freogans come. These small aliens convince Jack he must save them by locating their stolen Vitax, a power source that protects the alien’s galaxy. Jack’s astounded to learn the Vitax is hidden in a very-well guarded alien world that just happens to be located under his street.Armed with alien cards and a code-breaker, Jack and his new friend, Roxy, accept the challenge and embark on a perilous adventure to retrieve the Vitax. But no one and nothing is as they seem in this exciting adventure full of aliens and danger around every corner.Winell Road: Beneath the Surface, is an exciting and a fun read. The storyline will definitely hook MG readers with all the aliens and keep them on their toes until the end. There were a few words I wasn’t familiar with that slowed my reading and a few places that pulled me out of the MC’s head, but overall I enjoyed the story and feel of the book. I especially liked the fast-paced, adrenaline- pumping ending with a twist I didn’t expect. I hope the author is writing a sequel!

He lives at home with his mum and dad on Winell Road, a street filled with odd neighbors. Despite their oddities, so far in his life, everything has been normal…until a spots a strange ship hovering in his road. Before Jack knows it, he’s on a mission to save the world, joined by his new neighbor Roxy Fox.Winell Road is a delightfully charming read. There’s madness, mayhem, mystery, adventure and great big dollop of humor. The plot is cleverly devised, with seemingly random things all weaving together to create a tight and fantastic climax. The writing is flawless and engaging, and each chapter just makes you want to flick straight to the next. A fantastic read recommended for all ages. I would love to see a Winell Road two because I’m sure Jack and Roxy have many more adventures to come, all of which I’d love to read. Absolutely loved it.

Overcoming challenges and solving problems in each story, the characters all share one trait. They are all determined to solve a problem in their story. My characters are inspired by trying to conquer the problem that stands ahead. In most of my stories there is a shady character who always tries to get the best of the character. The character sometimes falls for the trap but always get out by solving the case.

Herman Cyril McNeile, MC, commonly known as Cyril McNeile and publishing under the name H. C. McNeile or the pseudonym Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. As serving officers in the British Army were not permitted to publish under their own names, he was given the pen name "Sapper" by Lord Northcliffe, the owner of the Daily Mail; the nickname was based on that of his corps, the Royal Engineers.

I figured it out though.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a collection of stories of the British experience of WW I, from the beginning to near the end. The stories center on the lives of individual soldiers, both officers and enlisted, in the trenches of France and does a good job of conveying the fears, conditions, deaths, and everyday life of the soldiers facing the horrors of the first modern war, and covers a lot of aspects and details now virtually forgotten.

Great WW 1 stories about the front line soldier By Amazon Customer more focus on the individuals than overall strategy. what the things are like for the soldiers in the trenches. About how terrifying they could be and how long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of terror could break any man after a while

3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Too 1917-styled and too brittish for most. By Evan E. Groff WW-I trench story from the Brittish experience. A little meandering in direction and done in a high-brow brittish in writing style and tone, but humorous in "Mark Twain moments" of the insanity of characters. There are better war tales from this era, including Eddie Rickenbacker's book.
