THE Mississippi is well worth reading about. It is not a commonplace river, but on the contrary is in all ways remarkable. Considering the Missouri its main branch, it is the longest river in the world—four thousand three hundred miles. It seems safe to say that it is also the crookedest river in the world, since in one part of its journey it uses up one thousand three hundred miles to cover the same ground that the crow would fly over in six hundred and seventy-five. It discharges three times as much water as the St. Lawrence, twenty-five times as much as the Rhine, and three hundred and thirty-eight times as much as the Thames. No other river has so vast a drainage-basin: it draws its water supply from twenty-eight States and Territories; from Delaware, on the Atlantic seaboard, and from all the country between that and Idaho on the Pacific slope—a spread of forty-five degrees of longitude. The Mississippi receives and carries to the Gulf water from fifty-four subordinate rivers that are navigable by steamboats, and from some hundreds that are navigable by flats and keels. The area of its drainage-basin is as great as the combined areas of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Turkey; and almost all this wide region is fertile; the Mississippi valley, proper, is exceptionally so.

Old masterpiece, forever young By Dr. Mathias Schulenburg Mark Twain is undisputedly one of the greatest American writers, valued by the innocents abroad, too. "Life on the Mississippi" is not only highly entertaining but also of great documentary value, because it contains apparently not a single lie. Even if, "a lie is as good as the truth as long as it is believed", the master is said to have said. Great stuff, forever young!

Blending well researched history and exciting fiction, this novel of adventure, danger, and romance begins with an expedition to the remote diamond quarry originally located by the great adventurer Henry Stanley in 1887. The site of the mine is so secluded and dangerous that expeditions are limited to one in 1966 and another in 2010. The fearless explorers face angry pygmies wielding poisoned arrows, unwelcoming wild animals, an unforgiving river, and rebel insurgents who are determined to take any uncovered diamonds.

I think it is appropriate for the tween age range, though older people will enjoy it as well. I liked that it taught the valuable lesson of understanding people that are different, while at the same time entertaining the reader with a fantastical sci fi journey of two twin cat sisters. This is the first book I have read by this author, but I will be keeping an eye out for future work.

It is a compelling story, and the characters are both likeable and realistic (a rarity in today’s literary world!). Although the story involves fantastical elements such as magic, sorcerers, demons, and shapeshifters, the realism of the dialogue and the language makes it completely believable. When Robert Locke, the relatable narrator/protagonist, and his magical coworkers and friends are threatened by dark, terrifying forces beyond anything they have ever encountered before, you feel as if it is happening to your very own friend—and you can’t stop reading until he is out of danger.Although the authors fall a bit short in the grammar/wording department at times over the course of the novel (thus the four stars instead of five), the story more than makes up for it. I very much enjoyed this book, and I am looking forward to the sequel!

I only read science fiction novels and it is difficult for me to find a plot that I haven't read before. Magicians living in our reality has been done before, however the authors find a good way to introduce the characters and expand on their developing relationships with each other. Adding to that is combining a few mythological stories into the historical development which is rarely done as successfully as this book. The antagonist is well developed even though the reader doesn't really see him very often and the antagonist is wonderfully human allowing the reader to connect with a magician who lives outside of our reality. I have recommended this book to my friends and will continue to do so. I look forward to any sequels. The reason I gave this 4 stars and not 5 is because of some editing mistakes along with a habit of the authors to repeat themselves too many times in describing the life of the magic world which distracted from the flow of the story. That said, the story line was compelling enough that I was able to overlook it. - Valerie Ryan

Scaramouche is an historical novel by Rafael Sabatini, originally published in 1921. A romantic adventure, Scaramouche tells the story of a young lawyer during the French Revolution. In the course of his adventures he becomes an actor portraying "Scaramouche" (a roguish buffoon character in the commedia dell'arte). He also becomes a revolutionary, politician, and fencing-master, confounding his enemies with his powerful orations and swordsmanship. He is forced by circumstances to change sides several times. The book also depicts his transformation from cynic to idealist. The three-part novel opens with the memorable line: "He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad." This line was to become Sabatini's epitaph, on his gravestone in Adelboden, Switzerland.

From Publishers Weekly Delightfully courtly, flowery but not dated, Sabatini's period romances--Scaramouche unfolds over the years leading up to the French Revolution--were deservedly popular when originally published, during the 20s and 30s. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

134 of 134 people found the following review helpful. The Ultimate Historical Novel By Kevin Hing Scaramouche is not only Rafael Sabatini's crowning literary achievement, it is one of the most engaging, thought-provoking and exciting historical novels ever written.Andre-Louis Moreau, (or Scaramouche, as he later becomes known), is a fascinatingly complex protagonist. Courageous, intelligent, quick-witted and intensely moral, Moreau is a character whose personal quest for revenge against the villainous Marquis de La Tour d'Azyr is a masterfully-woven story of swashbuckling action, romance and social conflict during the turbulent years of the French Revolution.Well-born lawyer. Fugitive. Dramatic actor. Expert swordsman. Impassioned, mob-inciting orator. Revolutionary politician. Sabatini sets Moreau upon an intriguing path of fate, development and discovery, a fictionalized yet compelling account of a single man's ultimate test of human character as the world around him spirals into madness.Sabatini has often been compared to Alexandre Dumas (author of the Three Musketeers, the Count of Monte Cristo) as a master of historical fiction. Though I believe Dumas to be the finest action-adventure writer of all time, and though some of Sabatini's other works (which I have not yet read) have been criticized as overly melodramatic, Sabatini has created in Scaramouche an historical action-adventure novel that transcends Dumas (and all modern action-adventure writers, for that matter) in that Moreau, his protagonist, is a thoroughly multi-dimensional character. Though Moreau is driven by his hatred and his quest for revenge, the spirit of his character is not defined by them, and the conflict of these passions with his ideals brings depth and substance to his exploits on the Theatre Feydau, the fencing halls of Paris, the floor of the National Assembly and his pursuit of the beautiful Aline de Kercadiou.Duels. Intrigue. Romance. More duels. Moral and political introspection. Its all here. Enjoy!

50 of 50 people found the following review helpful. An engrossing historical romance. By Leonard L. Wilson When his best friend, a young clergyman, is killed in a mockery of a duel by an arrogant noble, just to quiet his eloquent expressions of democratic ideals, Andre-Louis Moreau vows revenge. From that point, through meteoric careers as a consummate actor and scenario writer, then as a fencing master, and finally a politician, the brilliant Moreau keeps thwarting the aims of the aristocratic Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr. However, the nobleman causes pain to Moreau as well, and the time must come when the two will meet to settle their enmity once and for all. You are not likely to guess how their confrontation finally turns out. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, this swashbuckling novel is exciting throughout, and it presents one of the most dashing heroes in fiction, a man who can fight equally well with his mind, his mouth, his pen, and his sword, a man who stirs up events wherever he goes. I can't decide whether I like this novel or CAPTAIN BLOOD better, but these two books of Sabatini's are among the very best adventure novels.

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. A great adventure written by a master By A Customer Sabatini is ranked with the great adventure writers of all time, with Alexandre Dumas, Baroness Orczy, and Robert Louis Stevenson. With one of the best opening lines ever (right up there with "It was the best of times....") Scaramouche is his masterpiece.Andre Louis vows revenge upon the wrongful death of a young clerical friend by the wicked Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr. Taking up his dead friend's cause, he is charged with treason when he incites a crowd to riot. He flees his home and his love, and joins a troup of old school actors. Needless to say, Andre Louis takes on the role of Scaramouche, the rogue, and this way continues to thwart his enemy. He later becomes a fencing master, and...I won't spoil the plot for you, but I have never read a book with such an effective climax. Andre Louis is one of the immortal heroes of all time.

ORPHAN: ARRIVAL The world was on the verge of interstellar exploration when alien space craft entered our solar system. A year later, after diplomatic relations are established, concerns are surfacing. The earth government decides to continue its interstellar program, in secrecy, and launch its most ambitious ship .. a colony ship comprised of over 70 interplanetary freighters coupled to the most advanced hyper space drive every built by mankind. The launch of the colony craft is made far away from the PAC's prying eyes, from the jumble of the asteroid belt. Unfortunately, the PAC detect the launch and disable the h-drive around a rogue high-gravity planet in an unnamed solar system some 100 light years from earth. The PAC drop 12,000 colonists to the planet's surface and take 4,000 to the supposedly secret planet the humans had hoped to colonize. The humans on the rogue planet are on their own .. fighting high gravity, the animals, an alien environment and each other ... and that's just the first day ..
