AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS “Jules Verne’s masterpiece...stimulated our childhood and taught us more than all the atlases: the taste of adventure and the love of travel.” (Jean Cocteau) This edition of Jule’s Verne’s classic adventure story includes all the original illustrations. Phileas Fogg of London and his French valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days to win a £20,000 wager (worth £1.6 million today). The novel has inspired games, plays, musicals, radio and television adaptations, and several films including the famous 1956 movie starring David Niven. READERS’ REVIEWS: “This is perfect. It's engaging, amusing, exciting and beautifully written. It was an absolute pleasure to read.” “It's so rich in description that you can smell the smoke from the steam train and smell the spices!!! Brilliant story.” “A damned good yarn. It is thrilling from start to finish. An enjoyable read.” “Fantastic read, so glad I took the time to read this story. Truly an epic adventure suitable for all ages.” Michael Palin on his Ten Greatest Travel Books: “I’ve been interested in travel and foreign lands from as early as I can remember, and read an illustrated version of Verne’s classic novel in the Fifties. The heady delight of reading about someone travelling so fast around the world, visiting all these exotic places, struck a chord with me.” Sue Arnold in The Guardian: “Even if you have seen cinema versions of the novel, you will be as enchanted by the elegance and wit of the original story as you were dazzled by the extravagant visual effects of the films...This has to be the golden age of travel if your idea of bliss includes hackney carriages, Pullman trains and steamships, supplemented with the occasional howdah, sedan chair or sail-driven sledge. There are adventures round every corner.” “Jule’s Verne’s novels are matchless...He is an astonishing past master at the art of constructing a story that fascinates and impassions the reader.” (Leo Tolstoy)

Around The World in 80 Days (with the original illustrations), by Jules Verne

From School Library Journal Grade 6 Up?To most modern kids, classics may be great, worthy, even exciting stories, but they were written in and for their own times and the context can sometimes be obscure. Using the visually irresistible printing techniques popularized by the "Eyewitness" series, these two books, when prominently displayed, will probably attract more impulse readers than some of the dustier editions. But do they accomplish their stated aim? Direct textual illustration is plentiful, lively, and useful. The reproductions of prints, photographs, and maps that pepper each page and are intended to enhance readers' grasp of the times, however, are a mixed success. There is a sameness to them and an arbitrary feel to their use. Pirate buffs will find Treasure Island's variety of ship drawings, details of sailing minutiae, and photographs of pieces of eight or guns and swords quite satisfying. Verne's work is less enhanced by its graphics. This episodic travelogue would be best served by lots of clear maps with the route well marked. But the few maps shown are so small that the legends are unreadable and country and city names are blurred. Limitations aside, the initial appeal of this fresh approach may serve to attract some new readers to these enduring stories that have managed without any help for this long.?Sally Margolis, formerly at Deerfield Public Library, ILCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Around The World In Eighty Days ($23.99; $15.99 paper; May 1996; 296 pp.; 0- 670-86917-1; paper 0-670-86793-4): An entry in The Whole Story series, this is an annotated edition of the 1873 classic, printed on coated stock and enhanced by both atmospheric new paintings and hundreds of postage-stampsized 19th-century photos and prints. The explanatory captions (credited to Jean-Pierre Verdet only on the copyright page) accompanying the latter are largely superfluous, although they do add random snippets of historical background to the journey. It's the views of old ships and trains, of costumed natives, and distant ports of call--from Port Said to San Francisco--that evoke the tale's panorama of the exotic, just as the many lurid Verne trading cards and other spinoffs capture the plot's melodramatic highlights. A good way to put both book and story in context for young armchair travelers. (Fiction. 11-15) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review Praise for Classic Starts™: “The books have won the praise of a number of educators. Peggy Charren, a visiting scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, an advocate for higher-quality children’s media, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, said she has read several {and states}’they’re terrific.’”—The Wall Street Journal. “Where abridgements are useful in introducing literature to grade-schoolers not equipped to handle the real thing, books in this series will fill the bill.”—Booklist.  “Large print, short chapters, and an abundance of white space provide an attractive, more-accessible option for readers who are not ready to handle the originals.”—School Library Journal  “Even those who dislike adaptations will find much to admire in this retelling…”—School Library Journal (for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) “This…retelling will be appreciated by readers not yet ready for the original work.”—School Library Journal (for Anne of Green Gables).

The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.

McDonnell The story is about an eccentric Englishman named Phileas Fogg who makes a twenty thousand pound bet with five of his rich country club friends to travel around the world in eighty days with his trusty servant Passepartout a Frenchman. Along the way they have to overcome many obstacles. Fogg spends most of his fortune overcoming these obstacles and if they don't win the bet he will be ruined. There are some things however that even money can't overcome and several times Fogg is faced with a moral decision that if he pursues the right thing to do will significantly set him back on time.Their travels take them through England, Paris, the Suez Canal, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan, America, and Ireland. In India they rescue a princess who stays on with them throughout the rest of their journey and a love interest grows between her and Fogg. There is also another subplot involving a bank robbery in England where 55 thousand pounds have been stolen, and Fogg is considered to be the main suspect. A detective Fix is assigned to follow Fogg and to arrest him once he sets foot on English territory. This book seems to be split into two parts. During the first part of the book when things are going smoothly the servant Passepartout seems to be the main character. At each port Fogg stays in his cabin and just focuses on the next leg of the trip while Passepartout ventures out and gives you a description of the land. It would seem a shame to travel all around the world and not pause to take in any of the sights as Fogg does. I found most of these early chapters pretty mundane and uneventful. The subplot with Fix at times becomes annoying, and it isn't until they are all working towards the same goal, that this line of the story improves. I also found the exchange rate between dollars and pounds confusing at times. The pound must have been about four or five times greater than the dollar at the time this story was written. Fogg leaves England with around twenty thousand pounds and spends it seems over a hundred thousand dollars on the trip.Later on as the story progresses and things start to go wrong the focus changes over to Fogg. Passepartout still does some heroic things, but Fogg takes charge and shows some redeeming qualities. The pace of the story quickens and becomes more enjoyable with a few skirmishes taking place in India and America. Fogg seems a different person upon returning to England, and his life is changed forever. My wife has a framed poster that hangs on one of our walls with a collage of all of the movies that have won the best picture of the year award. "Around The World In Eighty Days" won the award in 1956, and the picture is represented in the collage with the main character Phileas Fogg and his trusty servant Passepartout taking a balloon flight. Based on this picture for years I always assumed the book was about a trip in a balloon around the world. I was surprised then to find out once I finally got a chance to read the actual book that they travel by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but that they never travel by balloon. It turns out that the most memorable scene from the movie was made up by the director and added on to the story. The director seemed to have come to same conclusion that I did, that the written story itself was very good, but I was expecting something a little more. The book was written in 1873. Jules Verne the author is a Frenchman. In this day and age it was pleasing to see both England and America looked upon in such a favorable light. Englishmen were portrayed as noble and Americans were portrayed as wild and adventurous.

This book is about a man named Mr. Phileas Fogg, and his faithful servant, Passepartout, that wager a bet that They can travel the whole world in eighty days stopping at Suez via Mont Cenis and Brindisi, then to Bombay, then Calcutta, Hong Kong, Japan (Yokohama), San Francisco, New York, back to London, all within eighty days, and by steamboats, and trains. However, a nosy detective, Detective Fix, tracks them down, and tries to arrest Mr. Fogg because he believes that Fogg stole fifty-five thousand pounds. As one may guess, this greatly detains Mr. Fogg, and it seems like he may not make the trip around the world after all. However, the Fix never seems to catch up with Fogg, and Fogg triumphs over most of the obstacles that come his way, like missing boats, missing trains, missing people, and Fogg even meets and rescues a beautiful Indian Princess called Aouda. However, Fix finally catches up to the detective, and everything seems lost for Fogg until Fix discovers that Fogg was not the robber, and Fogg is released. Even so, Fogg is one day late, and in doing so, misses the train that would have taken him to London precisely to win the bet. He ordered a special train, but even in doing so, still misses the bet...or so he thinks. The ending of the book is a very unexpected one. Read this book and find out!

It made me think of the way we humans treat each other, sometimes even with hatred not minding one another backgrounds and hardships. Sometimes we can be selfish and not willing to go the extra mile for somebody other than ourselves. I really enjoyed the journey the book took me through and the price was very affordable. I can't wait to read the second one.Kinship: The Covering (Book One)

Magical By Amazon Customer Kinship: The Covering (Kinship, #1) by Maria WatsonKinship: The Covering (Kinship, #1) by Maria Watson tells us about Maela who is the Captain of her unit, and she sets out with 8 of her fellow Kin to check on a crash of a ship in the woods. Once they view the people from the crash they go and help them. They tell the survivors that they will aid them but that they need to leave before the elves get there. The men from the space craft are from Detroit and find the idea of elves laughable. They travel through the woods and are almost at the Kins Clearing and are captured by the elves. One of the survivors, Sean Kraige, who is very angry and bitter(about life in general) is taken and tortured while the others are placed in a room . Maela has help from people who are her Kin (that work undercover in the elves castle), and Maela is then able to rescue Sean Kraige. They all leave the castle and end up back at Maela's Clearing. However, the Council of her Kin wants to banish Sean Kraige to the Outlands because they feel he is full of "venom" both of head and heart. Maela volunteers to go to the Outlands with Sean Kraige and teach him non venomous ways of dealing with things. All the while his crew stays with the Kin and try to figure out a way for them to get home to Detroit.Kinship: The Covering was a well thought out and crafted book. The reader is immersed into a world full of beauty and peace along with darkness and evil. The characters are well thought out and feel genuine. (Especially at times of high stress and they're cracking jokes.) The story is one that all ages will enjoy. There are no dull moments in this great story.A definite must read! 4.4 Stars*I won this book through Goodreads First Reads giveaway. In no way has this influenced my rating or opinion of this book.*

Every month 1,500 pastors burn out and leave the church. Learn how to beat the odds. The majority of pastors are not truly known—by anyone. They subconsciously isolate themselves from both staff and congregation so their insecurities, doubts, and failures aren’t exposed. Yet confiding in the wrong person can be a dead end at best and disastrous at worst. Former pastor Jimmy Dodd reveals how those in pastoral ministry can receive ongoing support, accountability, and restoration from relationships with a boss, counselor, trainer, mentor, coach, and good friend. Discover how you can move from surviving to thriving with the six relationships every pastor needs.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Essential Reading for Those in Ministry and Those Who Care About Them By Wesley N. Horne I will tell you what I told Jimmy Dodd after reading his book, "Oh how I wish I had this 30 years ago". I've known Jimmy as a dear friend and colleague in ministry for almost three decades. His primary focus has been caring for those in ministry in the USA and abroad since 1999. This book is the mature fruit of that experience with thousands of pastors, ministry leaders, and churches. It is the short course for thriving you should have had in College or Seminary. Biblically sound, grace filled, practical, and ESSENTIAL are just a few of the apt descriptors. Who should have it? Are you a pastor? Do you want to be a pastor? Are you married to someone pursuing or in ministry? Do you want to understand and encourage your pastor? If so, this is the book you need. Finally, don't just read it alone - discuss it in community (excellent reflection and discussion questions at the end of each chapter).A quote to ponder," Once congregational expectations set in, pastors realize their job descriptions don't allow them to embrace weakness and admit brokenness, and they conclude they don't have what it wakes to lead. If you're a pastor there are three potential paths to follow: One, walk away from the pastoral ministry. Two, become a professional pretender, never allowing anyone a glimpse behind the curtain at your back stage weakness. Or three..." get the book for that one!

By Wade Brown While Jimmy openly admits in the introduction, "...in no way do I believe this is the definitive book on pastoral ministry. Far better works precede this book, and I anticipate superior books to follow. I do wholeheartedly believe that this book will contribute to and advance the conversation, though" (p. 31). Well, consider the conversation advanced in a huge way! Thank you, Jimmy, for sharing your wit, humor, insight and brokenness with us. Thank you also for encouraging--even challenging us to invite key relationships into our lives to help us thrive on the front and back stages of our lives. Frankly, if you could only have three books in your library on pastoral ministry, this would need to be one of them!

Use the book for individual study, mentoring, coaching or as the foundation to helping pastors in your community By Christine Abraham While the book "Survive or Thrive" is written primarily for pastors, I found it to be an excellent and informative resource for ministry leaders too! The book is divided into two sections based on the book title. "Survive" covers topics such as hiding your real identity, avoiding isolation, thorn in the side and community. "Thrive" includes coaching, mentoring, counseling, friendship and more. Many concepts are derived from the PastorServe website and community. Transparency is woven throughout the book and Jimmy shares deep conversations. The book is written with the message of Christian love, while at the same time confronting and convicting pastors and leaders of their weak points. It's not a shaming or condemning book to read, and addresses hidden struggles. The target audience is primarily men and mens issues, where women are identified in their roles as "pastors wives" and how the men can minister at home.My favorite feature in the book is the chapter endings. Each one includes a set of very powerful questions:Reality questionsRewind and review questionsReflection questionsRemember questionsRespond questionsWhile many of the questions are personal for private journaling and mentoring, a few might be useful for team building your ministry staff. Many included related Bible verses for discussion. Also included in the book are infographics for emphasis and effectiveness. Use the book for individual study, mentoring, coaching or as the foundation to helping pastors in your community.I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Best! By PONDER Hahn's usual outstandingly informative notes & commentary. Only difficulty is that, for group study, you have to figure out how to divide up the questions for lesson assignments per meeting. I use about 6 pages of reading (not counting notes), which seems to work well for 1 1/2 hour meetings. Not all of the OT is available yet but we've also been through the entire New Testament, which is available in a single edition. Same great quality.

I wish all the other books for the Old Testament were available. Very useful footnotes and questions. Scott Hahn and his associates are the best!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent study... By B. Conyers This series is well written and easy to understand. Hahn's commentary provides a look into Biblical history with explanations of phrases, customs and traditions a reader, most likely, would not be acquainted with. He includes a spiritual perspective by including writings of the Church Fathers, Doctors and Popes. The books are affordable, nice sized print for older eyes, on good quality paper.
