While following Frank Rodeen on his latest task in locating and recovering two children, the niece and nephew, of a former nemesis, you will not lose interest but be pulled into the story and have a hard time putting the book down in anticipation of what will happen next. Rodeen is quite a remarkable man, hired by and being forced to work beside former enemies and ensure their survival. Such strong characters who, while never being willing to forgive one another from past events, are able to move forward for the greater good. It was great to be riding alongside Curly once again, and a new ally, Will, while dodging the bullets. The faster the bullets flew the faster I found myself reading. Now I want to know more about this Vince, for this has the potential of being more than a trilogy!

This book once again brings Frank Rodeen into action, but this time he teams up with his old nemesis, Adrien Emmons to help him protect his sister and two children from all the dangers his life style has brought on his family.Once again, Mr. Stefenick and out done himself with this book. The characters are very well developed and the story is beautifully written. He paints a vivid picture with his word and sucks you right into the story, taking you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. Loved this book, one I couldn't put down until I reached the final page. Yet another 5stars from me for another awesome book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Reawakening the Spiritual Soldier in Us By Dr Conrade Yap The book, "The Christian in Complete Armour" is widely considered a classic when it was first published in the 17th Century. It was published in three volumes (1655, 1658, and 1662) by William Gurnall, a Puritan and English clergyman. Widely considered as one of the best Christian books published in the English language, it can be obtained for free here. As the title suggests, this book is basically a treatise about the saints of God warring against the devil. John Newton calls this book the second book to be read besides the Bible. Charles Spurgeon even said that "every line is full of wisdom; every sentence is suggestive." While the original came in three separate volumes, James S. Bell Jr. has chosen selected portions to be used in this 365-days devotional. It is a book written to encourage spiritual growth. One reason why some believers fail to grow is because of their lack of awareness about the reality of spiritual warfare. It is one thing to profess one's belief but yet another to proclaim of God boldly and without reservation. Like the call to courage, before he talks about being bold, he points out the need to be bold on our inside first. If we prefer the "bondage of Egypt," how can we learn to claim the promise of God? We are reminded of what it means to be a child of God. As children of the King, surely there is not simply the promise of an inheritance in heaven but a vigour in living on earth. We serve God not like spiritual wimps but gallant soldiers in Christ. Our true strength is in God and that comes forth as a counter to humanism. If we do not check that, we would be trusting in our own strength rather than God's. Gurnall's volumes began with a quote from Ephesians 6:10-20 that sets the tone of his books. Unlike Gurnall's originals, this particular daily readings are not primed at exposition of the armour of God but as short "soul-searching reflections" of God's power on the individual believer. Each day, there is a date, a title, a quotation or a Bible verse, followed by a 1-page excerpt from Gurnall's original. In our Internet age, we have learned to skim web pages, send texts or tweets not exceeding 140 characters; and brisk through ebooks without necessarily taking time to pause and to reflect on what we have read. This is where this devotional is particularly helpful. By keeping the daily devotional a brief one-pager, with concise titles and a brief summary of the main idea, readers would find this devotional brief enough to read, insightful enough to ponder, convicting enough to pause, and challenging enough to apply. The single biggest idea in William Gurnall's original is that spiritual growth and spiritual warfare are interconnected. One cannot truly grow without the armour of God. One cannot fight without being aware that we are in a raging war. There are lots of applications in this book. There are calls for us to take note of our spiritual sins; to beware of evil around us; to be assured in Christ; to be encouraged that any storm is temporal; to be sensitive when God uses our consciences to speak to us; to take confidence not in our flesh but in God alone. We are to be on our guard against temptations and all the subtle influences of evil. If Gurnall's classic work is an alarm clock to wake up the sleepy and complacent soul, this book of 365 readings provides a daily chime to help us start a brand new day afresh and spiritually aware that we are not alone. God is always with us. With God, nothing that is against us will ever stand. Blessed is the one who wears his armour of God regularly. If you are considering buying a gift, this book is a strong recommendation.Rating: 5 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me courtesy of Moody Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions offered above are mine unless otherwise stated or implied.

DiFalco Amazing devotional fully backed up by scripture and an asset to Christians in their daily walk. The author, William Gurnall, included in his book, how to overcome the enemy of our soul (a subject most minister's will not elaborate on). Although this book was written in the 1650's, the lessons are still very revelant today. Here is a phenomenal example. Gurnall writes, '"Guard Against Discouragement. Depression is one of Satan's most dynamic weapons to divert you from God's Purpose in your life."' He goes on to explain some of the Devil's weapons to wear down the Saints. Anyone who chose to follow God can relate to the experiences shared in this publication. It is true and encouraging. It will renew your faith and confirm your journey in serving God. Clear and concise. It's very easy to understand. Kudo's to Moody Press for this superb publication. One of the best devotional's I have ever read. I am honored to have reviewed for MP.

Empty Then- Most every noble bloodline now in power came from a time when humanity was so undoubtedly sure we were alone in this universe. That is until 300 years ago, when upon discovering the Eluvian, the Elder race, we first began to see the signs of just how arrogant those beliefs truly were. And after an atrocity that left the Eluvian all but extinct and wreaked havoc on the best sides of mankind's moralities, only the worst of humanity was left in power. Now- I am an Empty, a slave whose will and emotions are scrapped away from them before being fastened like a puppet to their master's marionette strings. But now as my dark memories' return, I am finding I have my own Words. Words every Family will know before I am done.

He watches a rare classroom demonstration of the ‘infection’ of a simple creature by a Xenosite – creatures threatening their very existence. It’s a gruesome sight, and shows the enemy they are all working to defeat.Impressed, Red and his friends prepare to face the Field Test, a hazardous multi-day event that determines placement upon graduation. They all want to go to a different planet to compete in the qualifiers for WEAPON, a secretive project for MegaCORP that no one really knows anything about. More than anything they want to join the battle against the Xenosites, and WEAPON looks to be the key to winning this battle.Red’s oldest friend is Raven, an orphan like himself whose talent so far exceeds all the others that she’s classified as Prometheus, a very rare thing. Red himself is a fire starter, with the ability to create and throw fire.We will discover some wonderful ideas in this, such as the culture of the Blood Elves.I found myself rapidly reading this at night, sometimes staying up later than I should. That’s a great sign. Fantasy often conjures up visions of Middle Ages or middle earth, so be advised that Phantasia is in some ways closer to a Sci-Fi. Even the ‘magic’ feels more tech than magic.Amazingly for a novel this length I found only 2 actual typos. Early on there were a few too many ‘screams’, where other dialogue descriptions should have been used. Still, these either disappeared or I was too caught up in the tale to notice.I must complain, however, that this book didn’t end at all – which struck me as most unfair. First, nowhere was it mentioned this is a series, so finding myself left hanging was frustrating.Even in a series there ought to be some payoffs for the reader. In any Star Wars film, for example, there may be things left unanswered, but most current problems are resolved. Han Solo maybe encased in carbonite, but Luke and Leia escape Darth Vader’s trap and can now regroup to rescue their friend. Here we’re left, to all intents and purposes, in the pit of despair. In all, this is a very promising start from a very promising writer. But for heaven’s sake, fulfill your promise and write the conclusion.

The world-building is deep and imaginative; the action scenes are over-the-top and genuinely exciting; the monsters are satisfyingly awe-inspiring, the villain satisfyingly mysterious. The book unapologetically mixes space opera, kaiju horror, and epic fantasy into a story that reads a bit as though the cast of Harry Potter found themselves thrown into a lost chapter in the Final Fantasy series.I've put my share of hours into Harry Potter and Final Fantasy, but they each have their weaknesses, and PHANTASIA shares some of them. The characters are a bit schematic, defined principally by their roles in combat and secondarily by broad-brush elements of personal history (the aristocrat, the refugee). The action is often interrupted for long passages of exposition about the story world's history, politics, or metaphysics -- which can be done well, but here it tends to take on the feel of a role-playing game supplement, filling in vital statistics rather than advancing the narrative or kindling questions that keep the reader moving forward. Ideas from gaming seem to be imported more or less unquestioningly -- it's taken for granted that monster-killing is a useful yardstick of combat prowess, that monsters come in discrete "stages" corresponding to their power, that monster-killers come in bundles of shared powers called "classes," and so on.Fundamentally, I think I'm not the ideal audience for this book. I personally prefer books that are more focused on language, where the world-building emerges organically from events and dialogue rather than through authorial exposition. But if you're looking for a book that is, first and foremost, about heart-pounding action and epic wonder, you'll enjoy PHANTASIA.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic By cc2015 I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. I don't read a lot of fantasy or sci fi novels, so this was kind of a new territory for me, but I thought the plot, characters, and writing were all brilliantly executed. In the first chapter, we are introduced to Red, a student at Crest, and a creature called a Xenosite. I'm not going to go into too much detail (you have to read it yourself!), but the author's mastery of description and his imagination got me hooked right from the start--that can be seen throughout the rest of the novel too. In books of this genre by less skillful the story and characters are often lost underneath a bunch of description... but there was not a problem with that in Phantasia. Riyadad creates this new, epic, world that we get sucked into immediately. The cast of characters were written with a similar care; they were enjoyable and relatable, dynamic and interesting. Together, they make the already unique and engaging plot all the better. If you are considering buying this book, whether it is because you are intrigued by the synopsis or hooked by the sample... you should definitely add this to your bookshelf. It is a great find, and you will not regret it! Personally, I will be looking for future installments of this series.

By Louis Fabian A fascinating story of four college students who left the school and became drug smugglers and compete in the panga boat trade but got lost in the ocean and never made it to the shore. This is a great story that teaches about a teenage life who has no plans for the future but rely on something that would magically happen, it also shows how diverse perspectives on things can sometimes be fatal.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Scozzari Takes the Reader on a Superbly Strange Boat Trip By Mary E. Latela Three Days Out by Frank Scozzari is a rich tale about a boat trip, actually a smuggling trip. No one is really in charge, and the passengers represent diverse perspectives. The guy who is sure they will be safe because "The Secret" says so shows how some people believe that thinking positive thoughts will bring them riches and success.... No negativity is permitted, even if you can't see the sun and the fog is thicker than mud. Also colorfully represented are the GPS dependent folks, who insist that they are going in the right direction, despite no sight of land at all. The third (and there are more) are the pill poppers, who are convinced that whatever you swallow will help you to "feel really good" even if you are doomed. What a great bunch of what might be called "losers" out on the ocean, tossing out cellphones, breaking the GPS, and presumably consuming all that they were supposed to deliver! Frank Scozzari writes with a superb understanding of the way people think and act in his realistic fiction, causing us to wonder if people really do these wild things, AND knowing that, yes, sometimes people do the most foolish things. Strongly recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Power of Group Think By Kindle Customer49 Are we always so confident about where we’re going and more importantly, who we are? After all, college students will binge in order to appear ‘cool,’ teenagers will do anything to avoid having egg on their faces, and keeping up with the Joneses has been in force for years and years. Bottom line? Never underestimate the power of Group Think. In Frank Scozzari’s fine, short story, “THREE DAYS OUT” this concept is explored and developed extremely well. Much like Hitchcock, the author reels the reader in with a smooth, steady hand, showing us how a simple boat ride can turn into something far more powerful than simply the depth and beauty of the sea; it can reveal the human need to belong, no matter what. A truly absorbing, 5* read!

Duty with Honor...Above All Else. The year is 1971. With Cold War tensions at their peak, the U.S.S. Farnley has been selected to take part in Operation Marathon, the brainchild of ambitious and unscrupulous one-star Admiral Eickhoff, who sees the dangerous experiment as his stepping stone to greater power and national prestige. The World War Two-era destroyer--with her outdated technology, low crew morale, and mentally unstable captain--would be an ideal component of the Admiral's experiment due to her chief characteristic: her expendability. Failure, however, is not an option for the new Engineering Officer Lee. His enthusiastic faith in the viability of the aged vessel and his dedication to duty with honor puts him at immediate odds with soon-to-retire Chief Petty Officer Ross, while ultimately inspiring his fellow crewmen to help return the Farnley to fighting form. But their dedicated efforts are creating a powerful and unforgiving enemy--and when unexpected catastrophe befalls the Farnley, those manning the old destroyer will suddenly be forced to choose between duty and disobedience, between life and death. Larry Laswell's The Marathon Watch is a gripping, authentically detailed naval adventure that harkens back to the heyday of the late, great storyteller Tom Clancy. Based in part on the author's actual military experiences, it provides a fascinating inside look at the shadowy intricacies of U.S. Navy politics wrapped around an enthralling story of honor, determination, and grave peril during the dark days of America's Cold War.  Featuring a richly developed cast of officers and crewmen, Laswell's thrilling chronicle transports the reader aboard the aging World War Two-era destroyer, U.S.S. Farnley, into the perilous heart of an ill-conceived experiment. There the frailties of human nature, the ambitions of unscrupulous men, and the terrible vicissitudes of nature will combine to create a disaster at sea that only courage, ingenuity, and a devotion to duty can possibly overcome.  New in this edition, a leadership discussion guide!

The Marathon Watch: Ross (Volume 1), by Larry Laswell

Review "A Vietnam-era naval thriller pits a destroyer's crew against a scheming admiral. Dialogue and action are vivid, and the machinations of the naval hierarchy are completely believable. Scenes aboard the ship are palpably real, especially the breathtakingly intense rescue scene. A riveting, realistic tale of Navy seamen and their pride in their ship." -- Kirkus Reviews"Excellent book; It's as good as the military novels from Follett or Clancy . . . The Marathon Watchwas a 'can't put it down' book from the word go." -- Gerald Pall"A portrayal of integrity versus malevolence wrapped inside a spellbinding story that takes you inside a world of adventure and intrigue . . . a must read." -- Mike Hannigan"Treachery and greed are up against honor, loyalty and ingenuity in this rousing tale of a ship and crew placed at risk by those who should have had their best interests at heart. The author spins a gripping yarn whose climax will have you on the edge of your seat. A great read!" -- Lindsay Ziegler"Leadership insights from the top to the bottom of the hierarchy AND an inside / outside view of each character--fascinating." - Jeanette Shallop"I knew someday I would find a gripping contemporary book about the United States Navy...It was great to read a book able to make the traditions and culture of the US Navy come to life and have meaning."  -- Andrea Luhmanon"This is a book about power, control, military politics, friendship, loyalty, hard work, seamanship, all held together by the writing skills and imagination of Larry Laswell." -- Roger D. Thomeon

I have read over a thousand books in 10 years. I say that not to brag, but to give you a measurement of my sense of comparison when I say that this book was very very good. Military fiction has not been my favorite genre. Tom Clancy goes into way too much detail. Somehow Laswell goes into a lot of detail, but he does it in a way that keeps your interest. His character construct was excellent. I feel as though I personally met and knew each individual in this book. His knowledge of the Navy is thorough and complete. Laswell has complete mastery of the English language. His sentences are perfectly constructed and punctuated. What I enjoyed most of all is his colorful scene descriptions. Here is a quote from a night scene aboard the Farnley:" The hot humid day had followed the sun westward, leaving a cool midnight breeze. The sky, God’s special gift to the sailor, was free of city lights and urban pollution. Placed on display, all of creation was set on the night’s canopy of blue-black velvet adorned with the glistening diamond dust of billions of lesser stars and the sparkling one-point diamonds of the major stars.A deep golden harvest moon hung low on the eastern horizon. Its glow cut a pewter path from moon to ship across shifting liquid swells rolling forward to meet the Farnley’s bow. The bow, rocking gently, rose, then floated gently down to embrace the next swell."Wow, I wish I could write like that. This is a book about power, control, military politics, friendship, loyalty, hard work, seamanship, all held together by the writing skills and imagination of Larry Laswell.Great Read.

Gripping Navy Sea Story By Bill Stein, CAPT, USNR (ret) ]] I was a young naval officer in the early 70's aboard a similar destroyer like the USS Farnley in Larry Laswell's book. The book captures the real relationships between Admirals, Commodores and ship Commanding Officers, down to the new Division Officer and his relationship with the experienced Master Chief Petty Officer in his division. This book is more in line with "Mr. Roberts", not a shoot 'em up, it tells the story of a ship at war with it's own destructive navy Admiral. This is a book about leadership and how to overcome adversity while keeping a sense of humor. This book should be on the bookshelf of every new Naval Officer. It's difficult to put down until you finish it. Caution, you may lose sleep reading this book when you have a full day of work ahead of you!

This was during one of the most tumultuous periods in US history—not only was the nation’s involvement in the Vietnam War at its height, but the Nixon Administration was dealing with the ever-growing nuclear threat posed by the Soviet Union. Year after year the US produced and deployed more and more Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, and so did the Soviet Union. Because neither power had any ability to defend against incoming missiles, the only plausible strategic approach that the US could come up with was that of “Mutual Assured Destruction,” known best by the apt acronym “MAD.” According to MAD, once the volley of one-hundred megaton nuclear-tipped missiles had virtually destroyed the infrastructures of both the US and the Soviet Union, along with their land-based air capabilities, all that would be left was their respective navies.Survival following such a war would depend on sea power alone. And survival is the right word. While prior to such a catastrophic exchange of blows both powers sought supremacy; but with the magnitude of destruction wrought to both of them, it was feared that even a second or third-world nation, sensing a power vacuum, might be tempted to swoop in and take advantage. Therefore, US military strategy, developed under the umbrella of MAD turned its attention to a rapidly deployable and self-sustaining navy—one capable of picking up the pieces left after the missiles had done their damage, and to thereby ensure some sort of military, political and maritime order. That’s where Rear Admiral Eickhoff enters the story.Admiral Eickhoff, while a brilliant military strategist, was driven as much by hubris as he was by any desire to protect US interests. It was he who came up with the Operation Marathon naval exercise. He convinced the Senate Armed Forces Committee of the merits of such an endeavor. If the exercise proved as successful as he claimed it would, it would provide the committee with all the ammunition it needed to fund the procurement process necessary for the development of a more durable navy, one that could survive for a long period without land-based support. Plus, it would propel his career to the next level. It is with this backdrop that Laswell, in Tom Clancy fashion, develops his intricately involved narrative. I hesitate to give away any of the salient aspects of the story, as they are best left for the reader to discover on his own. But I will include in my review this humorous exchange: “Did you hear about the maple syrup?” Meyers interrupted. “Hell, that’s not maple syrup; that’s my paint.” Meyers looked at the pile of shiny, square metal tins stacked on the aft part of the fantail and asked, “What the hell were you going to do with six-hundred gallons of gray paint?” “I only ordered a hundred gallons,” Biron began, “but that was six months ago. When it didn’t come in, I reordered it the first of the next month. I’ve been doing that for six months. Now the great navy supply eagle gets diarrhea and delivers all six hundred gallons at one time, but instead of paint, I get maple syrup. The only similarity is that they both come in five-gallon containers. What the hell am I going to do with one hundred and twenty tins of maple syrup?”I thoroughly enjoyed “The Marathon Watch.” I think that any reader who appreciates Tom Clancy’s body of work, particularly his “The Hunt for Red October,” will be able to get into this book. While the plots are quite different, the military milieu is similar, as is Laswell’s attention to detail and descriptive language. In fact, as I sit here completing my review I can still smell bearing-burnt oil from the engine room, and taste salt water on my lips.As far as the end of the book is concerned: Without a doubt Laswell’s dramatic closing scene is one of the most powerful I have experienced in a very long time. I will not go into it because I would not want to spoil the experience for readers.“The Marathon Watch” is a very good read. I would love to see this book make it to the big screen.

By Teresa Lowe Tony Evans in one of our true preachers of the Word in a world where there is much confusion about what to believe. He takes it one step at a time where even a babe in Christ will understand the scripture. This book is very important because he tells us that our war on earth is not with others, but with Principalities. It is an age old war that has been going on since Satan tried to overthrow God in heaven and was thrown down instead, but he took 1/3 of the Angels with him. Satan is using us as pawns in his war against God. We need to learn how to recognize it and with God's help avoid the temptations of sin and how effective prayer can help you do that and more.
