CS Lewis' devious little book "The Screwtape Letters" records the fictitious letters between two demons discussing this very issue. What the story is REALLY about is what makes humans succeed or fail in their search for God. It is about where, how, and why humans are weak. Fantastic Book - Amazing Class By Deb Draeger The Screwtape Letters class that I took at Woodland Hills Church was led by Dan Kent and it was amazing! The course material covered the book concepts well and indepth. We were given lecture as well as small group discussion opportunities at each class. My only wish was that the class could be longer than 6 weeks, in order to have space to address all of the deep truths found in the C.S. Lewis' book and then time to discuss and ponder how to apply them to our everyday lives.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. handy helper when leading my Sunday school class By Amazon Customer I used this to help me better understand the book, and as a just-in-case if I needed to get conversation going in a lull. Because I didn't read the screwtape letters slowly like I should have, this book helped me .... Rather like cliff notes. He does mention group activities being included, but there were none, which was a bummer. It was also pretty vague on some things, presumably because he already knew things and didn't need to write them down.

I found that the study guide helped me to better understand the significance of each letter that Screwtape wrote to his nephew Wormwood to promote sin in the "patient." I highly recommend purchasing the study guide with the book to get the most enjoyment in reading it.

Everything You Need to Know About Wicca, from Best-Selling Wicca Author Lisa Chamberlain

It is estimated that there are over one-million practicing Wiccans around the world today. But what is it that has made these people turn their back on the formal, structured religions that encompass the majority of the Western world? In our modern, high-pressured world, many of us fail to take notice the sheer beauty of the natural world surrounding us. In many ways, this is a travesty: the world we live in today seems so completely distant from the one our ancestors lived in, a world where humans and nature were at one, their existence intertwined in the natural cycles of life. Wicca is a new way of life, a religion that takes you back to a more simple time, before the invention of the high-tech gadgetry we see all around us. You will learn to live and appreciate the natural world that surrounds you, celebrating the intricate changes in the seasons and everything they bring — from the bounties of the Summer harvest, to the cold and darkness of the Winter months, as Mother Nature rests in preparation for the next explosive cycle of life that Spring brings. Wicca is a re-incarnation of the very earliest religions, long pre-dating Christianity. Wiccans celebrate and share many of the same beliefs that these early people held, and try to embrace their way of life, all while remaining fully-functional in today's modern world.

Getting Started as a Wiccan

If you’re sold on this new, exciting, peaceful way of life, that’s great! Good to have you onboard. Unfortunately, and despite this commitment, this is where many people get stumped. One of the biggest questions I hear would-be Wiccans ask: “how do I start practicing Wicca?” The truth is, there is no right answer. If you endeavour to learn as much as possible about this religion, follow the core principles (for example, the Threefold Law), and revere the natural world surrounding you, as far as I’m concerned, you’re a Wiccan. If you’re just starting out, I’m sure this vague answer is of little help to you! That’s why I set out to write this mini-series of books, titled Practicing the Craft. In this particular book, you’ll learn everything you need to know about Wicca altars and tools.

Wicca Altar and Tools: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide

Practicing magic isn’t compulsory for Wiccans, however many people are inevitably attracted to the religion by the potential to positively change their lives for the better. As such, spellwork is one of the most discussed parts of being Wiccan. If you want to start practicing magic, it can help to have a dedicated place for your spellwork – a Wicca altar. There are also numerous “tools” and supplies Wiccans commonly use in their magic. In this book, I’ll be introducing you to them all, as well as explaining what each is for. Don’t worry – you won’t have to rush out and spend your money acquiring all the relevant tools. Most tools are completely optional, so it’s up to you which ones you want or need. Many can be sourced from nature or acquired relatively cheaply, too. We will also be discussing some of the more popular ingredients used in spells, as well as (optional) attire for rituals. Finally, we’ll be taking a look at how you know a particular tool is right for you, as well as preparing the tool for spellwork by removing any negative energies – in a process known as clearing and consecrating. In other words, Wicca Altar and Tools will teach you everything you need to know to start practicing Wicca, today!

When the Companions reach Al'Taara, they face dangers from outside the towering walls . . . and from within. Even as deathlords plot the destruction of the city, its citizens are slowly being transformed into hideous creatures that are driven by a vast and screaming hunger. The Companions walk the nightmares of vanished civilizations, and the dead whisper secrets to Kara Kinfolk, but she and those with her have little time to solve the riddles of Al'Taara before Tarsis the Artificer comes another step closer to their world.

"The Resurrection Tower lies in wait at the end of a long road, a journey between awake and asleep, life and death . . . between the heavens and the hells. Through numerous wars on numerous planes, it has stood watch. No one knows why. Yet the tower must be understood if this world and others are to be saved."

Highly Recommended Fantasy Horror By chettsgenie 'Unforgotten Volume II' is the fourth book in Holgate's Resurrection Tower series, and continues the journey of Kara, Tal and their group as the eater of dreams stalks the heroine.I was going slowly crazy waiting for this book to come out and once it did I devoured the book far too quickly (The wait for the next one is now liable to kill me). Full of amusing banter, bone-chilling horrors and no-holds-barred sex scenes, book four never fails to entertain. The characters are just - as Kara would say herself - awesome! Once you meet them you'll want to follow them along, regardless of how frightening their journey becomes. After this super-suspenseful instalment, I can't wait to see what comes next for the heroes and heroines in Holgate's terrifying fantasy realm.Overall this is a fantastically entertaining read. Highly recommended!

Light speed is no longer a limit. AI is no longer a dream. And for some, death is no longer the end! It is the 107th year of the 4th Galactic age, and humanity is no longer shackled by the light speed limitation. The Dead Zone appeared in the Sol system at the dawn of the 4th Age, and to this day it serves as a perpetual reminder of a dark moment in human history: the battle that claimed the lives of thousands and disrupted the very fabric of space. The conflict was brief but devastating, leaving behind the shattered fragments of the Solarian Union’s Second Fleet, the lifeless hulls of a convoy of civilian ships and countless questions about who or what could have been responsible for such an atrocity. Nearly a century later, Kade's destiny is forever altered when she steps inside an ancient 'derelict' spaceship located at the heart of the Dead Zone. What secrets does the 'derelict' hold? And why does the Union seek to destroy it?

You who so plod amid serious things that you feel it shame to give yourself up even for a few short moments to mirth and joyousness in the land of Fancy; you who think that life hath nought to do with innocent laughter that can harm no one; these pages are not for you. Clap to the leaves and go no farther than this, for I tell you plainly that if you go farther you will be scandalized by seeing good, sober folks of real history so frisk and caper in gay colors and motley that you would not know them but for the names tagged to them. Here is a stout, lusty fellow with a quick temper, yet none so ill for all that, who goes by the name of Henry II.

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, by Howard Pyle

Review “[Pyle’s work] struck me dumb with admiration.”—Vincent van Gogh, in a letter to his brother

From the Publisher 8 1.5-hour cassettes

About the Author Howard Pyle was a successful American author and illustrator, many of whose books are aimed at younger readers. After only a few formal lessons in artistic techniques, Pyle initially began his career creating illustrations for magazines, finally publishing his first work in Harper s Weekly at the age of twenty-five. Pyle s career took off, and he was soon creating his own stories and publishing illustrated books for children. His most famous work is The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which was the first cohesive retelling of the medieval legend of Robin Hood. His other famous works include Men of Iron, a tale about knighthood, and a four-volume collection about King Arthur. Howard Pyle died in Florence in 1911 at the age of fifty-eight.

(Referring to Kindle edition).Howard Pyle was the first person in the modern era to collect all the Robin Hood ballads that had come down from the midieval era and put them into a modern format, structured as stories and so forth. Essentially every version of Robin Hood in the past century has drawn on Howard Pyle's Robin Hood as its major source, and reading this book is the best way to understand why the minor characters in (for example) Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" are named things like "Will Scarlet" or "Much the Miller's Son."I was given this book to read as a child, and it was and still is one of my all-time favorites (although I always avoided reading the final chapter, which Pyle even warns his readers they may want to do). The elevated, pseudo-elizabethan style even helped me later on -- when I got to Shakespeare in school, the language was easy for me, because I'd been reading Howard Pyle since I was eight. The problem with this ebook version is that it doesn't contain the illustrations, though. And that's simply unforgivable. Howard Pyle is today better known as an illustrator than as a writer. He was the art teacher who taught people like Arthur Rackham and N.C. Wyeth. His illustrations are immensely rich and detailed, and as full of period accuracy and background research as his writing was. It's an unforgivable shame to miss them.Versions of this book can be found online free with illustrations. Don't bother with this version, as it doesn't have them. Reading this book without the illustrations is like taking an oscar-winning film and just listening to the sound with the screen blacked out. You can do it, but why?EDIT: There are now many Kindle versions of this book, all cross-linked so they share reviews. Currently at least, none of the free versions have illustrations; the 99-cent version marked "illustrated" does appear to have most of them, but severely cropped, without many of Pyle's marginalia and scrollwork.

70 of 73 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful, just beautiful. By Jon It pains me to read the reviews here by people who bought this book looking for the Disney fox. This is a legend, folklore, not fairy tale. It's closer to Beowulf than Beauty and the Beast. The language is fantastic, poetry! I read it first when I was very young, fourth grade maybe, but I enjoyed it then as much as I enjoy it now. The language is an obstacle for the first two pages, maybe three, but, after you acclimatize yourself to it, it creates a unique mood and atmosphere. This book is one of my all time favorites. I laughed, I cried, I wrote a review.

In this book you meet them all - including the powerful Little John, courageous Will Scarlet, musical Allan a Dale, and sly Friar Tuck. Howard Pyle offers what is probably the most complete and best collection of Robin Hood tales. All the old favorites are included - Little John and his quarter-staff toppling Robin into the water, Robin winning the golden arrow at Nottingham's archery contest, and the Sheriff being outsmarted in numerous attempts to capture Robin. But these are just the tip of the iceberg - this book is chock-full of entertaining merry adventures. The medieval setting is portrayed beautifully, including the vast gulf between the upper and lower classes of society, the corruption and greed of the nobility, and the hypocrisy of the medieval Roman Catholic church where religion has degenerated to mere outward rituals. Even the language is somewhat antiquated, which initially seems tedious, but persevere because you will soon find that this an enjoyable and essential addition that heightens the heroic atmosphere of the story. But the medieval setting is not presented without a social commentary - Pyle shows that the unbalanced social structure inevitably resulted in the oppression of the poor and weak. It is left to Robin Hood and his men to take justice into their own hands, and fight nobly for the cause of the downtrodden. Such justice is accomplished in a questionable manner, because the notion of robbing the rich to help the poor implicitly endorses civil disobedience. But the more important theme of seeking justice and maintaining truth and right is in itself a noble one. With Robin Hood, we find ourselves wanting justice, and being prepared to make unselfish sacrifices in order to achieve it. When justice is done, it is actually the greed and corruption of the nobility that has led to its own destruction and ruin. But the real attraction of this gem are the enthralling exploits of Robin Hood and his band of merry men. Howard Pyle presents Sherwood Forest as a rather glamorous utopian world where feasting and song abound, where it is never winter, and where the ale rarely runs dry. Robin Hood clearly represents a form of hedonism, and in his company there is never a lack of action, adventure, or for that matter - ale. But it's not the beer that attracts us to Robin Hood, it's rather his bravado. There is no end to the accomplishments of muscles and mind, as he and his merry band outwit all comers by sheer physical skill in archery, wrestling, swordmanship, and quarter-staff combat, or by outsmarting them with deceit and disguise. To our delight, Robin's brawn and brains always come out on top at the end.Howard Pyle's collection of Robin Hood's merry adventures is a classic that is constantly entertaining and exciting - one that you'll want to own and read over and over!

The saga of Amy Lynn continues in this second action packed novel by Jack July. As the story begins, Amy is coming home from Afghanistan wounded and confused about who she is and where she belongs. Back home in rural Alabama, surrounded by the love of family and friends, she needs to heal her body, bury her boyfriend, and decide what to do with her future.

But life has a plan of its own...

When eight-year-old Kristy Wilson is taken from her Missouri home, the count of missing young girls rises to twenty-three. Under orders from an angry, vengeful president, the CIA takes action. Amy is persuaded by her friend, CIA operative Tatiana Aziz to join her team as a “trainee” on a worldwide chase to find who is taking these girls and bring Kristy back home.

Follow Amy and Tatiana while you meet an eclectic group of CIA cohorts. They race the clock to find Kristy and along the way, deal some old school American justice. The author highly recommends reading the foundation book, Amy Lynn. Golden Angel plays on many characters and situations from the first book. However, Golden Angel will stand on it's own.

By JohnK Amy Lynn: Golden Angel ... if the first book was To Kill a Mockingbird written by Vince Flynn, this is Brad Thor doing an episode of Mission: Impossible, where we see the entire team being assembled, complete with biographies. This takes place shortly after the end of book one. Amy is still recovering from the battle at the climax of that. She's now close to President North (aka: "Not" Sarah Palin ... even though her Secret Service handle is "Polar Bear"), and back home with her charming and rustic family. But it's hard to go back to the way life used to be for Amy, especially after all she's been through. She wants to simply bury her boyfriend and move on with her life, but she doesn't yet know how to do that yet.And now, Amy's friend "T", CIA killer, wants to bring her on board a mission to hunt down a human trafficking ring that is abducting American girls...Yes, this one went dark quickly. We've got a Mission: Impossible team of badasses with fully-developed backstories and biographies. The reformed black militant cryptographer; the one-man insurgency; the Polish playboy who thinks he's James Bond; and the boy scout who has won the dark heart of a CIA Assassin. The "dark" continuous when you get to the mildly incestuous twins, one is an autistic computer genius, the other is a (literal) whore (sort-of retired). And, of course, Amy Lynn. There is action, there is adventure, there is some neat spy stuff, and there is even the possibility of redemption. But sometimes, redemption can only be found in death.

I'm holding back the fifth star purely on technical issues such as uncaught typos, and I anguished over doing even that. I've been in communication with the author and he graciously forwarded me the change sheet that has been submitted to the publisher. So, even those minor issues should be resolved shortly It's a great book. Jack's a great writer. If you fell in love with Amy Lynn Braxton in the first book, you'll fall even more deeply in love with her in this one. This book is not for everybody. If you're the literary fiction type who delights in deconstructing great literature until it's stripped of all meaning, move along. There is nothing for you here. If you're the kind of person who finds patriotism to be an embarrassing joke, or traditional values subversive to your preferred social order, this story will drive you insane. Of course, if you're one of those people, you're also a complete ass whose opinion is irrelevant anyway.I suspect that Jack is not one of those people who insists that everything in life comes in various shades of gray. There are issues that stand out in stark contrast to the alternatives and there are absolute truths, but Amy and her allies never let doing what is nice get in the way of doing what is right. The book is like real life that way. The USA is hurting for lack of books like this and needs many, many more of them. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

By Aquabizzle Just as great as the first book, Amy Lynn: Golden Angel continues where Amy Lynn leaves off. Jack July takes you along with Amy as she finds her place after a traumatic experience in Afghanistan. Ultimately, he takes you along as Amy follows her heart and does what needs to be done for the sake of American little girls being taken by a human trafficking ring.Although much brutality is woven into the story, it is offered as the raw and ugly truth in the darkness of our society. And because Amy Lynn has faced one of the most brutal events in her life that one could comprehend, her total being is driven to deliver justice to those who would destroy all that is innocent and precious. The book keeps you emotionally interested in every character, clearly showing the importance of every single one of them to the mission of saving a little girl and putting an end to a disgusting evil that poses a threat to (in this case) prepubescent American girls. The truth is that I fell in love with Amy Lynn Braxton during the first book, seeing her courage and ability to turn serious pain into an ability to help keep evil at bay. This book delivers that all over again.
