As the first female alpha in living memory, Terra Wilder already has her hands full bringing old-fashioned uncles and cousins into line. But with a regional gathering of ten clans on the horizon, the shifter will soon be faced with an even more arduous task: holding her own against a lineup of power-hungry pack leaders.

Justin Young is the strongest of the opposing alphas, and he also happens to be the handsome but disturbing older brother of Terra's own mate. Justin is far too powerful to vanquish in a pitched battle, so Terra instead opts to trick the alpha into supporting her cause by pretending to be a pack princess on the prowl for a husband.

Flirting with a shifter who looks like a dark reflection of her true mate is no fun. But if Terra doesn't maintain her clan's independence, her male relatives risk being tossed out into the cold while her female cousins are turned into chattel. On the other hand, if Terra succeeds, she might just lose herself - and her mate - in the process.

By Claudia King Aimee's Wolf Rampant series definitely steps up from being a standalone in this sequel, not only building upon what was established in the first novel, but also laying the groundwork for a much larger story overall. The protagonist Terra goes from being a lost soul to a young woman with a clear role in life at the onset of Pack Princess -- but now she has to grapple with the trials and tribulations of living up to it!While the first book had more romantic and coming-of-age themes at the forefront, Pack Princess is, in some ways, more of a traditional shifter tale of inter-pack politics, rivalries, drama, and betrayal, all centred around a heroine thrust into a role she is not quite ready for. It was a nice change of pace from the previous book, doing a good job of maintaining a lot of what made it enjoyable without ever falling into the trap of retreading the same ground. One of the things I especially enjoyed about the first novel was its snappy pacing, and I feel that Pack Princess does a good job of pulling off "same-but-different" in this regard as well. The first half of the novel is ostensibly slower than that of the prequel, but this works fine to establish Terra settling into her new role as alpha, and to lay the groundwork for everything to come later on. The latter part of the book, however, ramps up the drama much more strongly than Shiftless did, building everything to a very tense and emotional climax with a lot more clout than I was expecting! There's a very solid self-contained story to be found in Terra's acclimation to her new role as alpha, along with reconciling her pack's place in the world now that the "golden age" of her powerful father's leadership has ended, but by the end of the book the gates are flung wide open for a third instalment in the series. Things have changed in an irrevocable way, a new (and seemingly much more volatile!) status quo has been established, and several threads are left hanging that you just *know* are ripe for tying up in book three.Overall, if you enjoyed Shiftless, I'm sure you'll enjoy the sequel! For the most part it sticks with the same light, enjoyable tone (complete with a particularly cute little character interview segment to recap on a few things), but isn't afraid to go slightly darker and more intense as things ramp up to their climax.I didn't think about this so much in the previous novel, but on reflection I think this series would be absolutely perfect for new adult audiences and general fans of werewolfy adventures alike!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great adventure! By Vandelay This is the fourth book I've read of Aimee Easterling's and as always, I am impressed with her ability to write a smart, intriguing novel. I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I enjoyed this one even more. This novel is more of an adventure and takes the reader deep into the world of werewolves, unlike any other way I've seen werewolves portrayed. Aimee does a great job of shifting (no pun intended) from human to werewolf seamlessly. The author never lets the reader forget that the characters are not human, even when they're in human form and dealing with human issues. The werewolf in them is always there and there is an animalistic (I'm not even sure if that's a real word!) quality that is always there, which makes the telling of the story from a werewolf's experience more plausible.I am curious to see where the series goes next. The book had a climactic end, leaving the reader wanting to know what will happen to Terra, Wolfie and her band of yahoos. I liked seeing how the pack matured from the first book and to see Terra growing even stronger, embracing who she really is.My only desire for the book (and this is because I'm a hopeless romantic!) is to see more of Terra and Wolfie's relationship in a more sensual form. The chemistry is hot between these two characters and I would love to see more of just the two of them and the passion they share for each other. Not everyone enjoys that stuff, but I do. This did not deter me from the story at all though because I really just want to see them end up happy together. This story is more of an adventure though...the sensuality between Terra and Wolfie would merely be icing on the cake for me!I'm anxiously awaiting the release of book three! Once again, Aimee Easterling's amazing way with words has created an exciting adventure that does not disappoint!

Having read Shiftless, the first story of Terra the alpha female...I greedily wolfed down the sequel, Pack Princess. (Pun ntended!)Aimee's style is compelling, she combines action and pathos....confidence and vulnerability. ..in equal measure. I search for plot holes ( my pet hate) in all I read and found none in Pack Princess. Her presentation of the psychology of a wolf pack is both accurate and biologically sound. Pace is key for me in all I read. ..long turgid descriptive passages adding nothing to the story send me daft....no such problem with Aimee's writing..she keepscthe plot moving at exactly the right clip. She is a born storyteller. Am I a fan? Oh yes!!!

After being exiled to the farmland around her village, Rowan Northwood takes the only chance at freedom she might ever get: she runs away with a passing Knight and doesn't look back. The woman cares nothing for Rowan's company, but nor does she seem perturbed by the powers that burn within her. Rowan soon learns that the scope of their journey is more than a desperate grasp at adventure. She breaks away from the weighty judgement of her village, but has no choice but to abandon her Kingdom altogether. Sir Ightham's past leads them through Kastelir, a country draped in the shadow of its long-dead Queen—a woman who was all tusks and claws and great, spiralling horns. Hiding her necromancy is no longer Rowan's greatest challenge, and what leads them across Kingdoms and through mountains is a heavier burden than she ever could've imagined.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. I read a lot of books, but rarely do ... By Jack Knight I read a lot of books, but rarely do I post reviews. When I do, it's usually because of me wanting to see more from an author, and this is definitely the case here. I want others to see this review and hope they join in encouraging the author to continue their work. There are a few grammatical errors/dropped words, but that's about it as far as flaws go for a debut novel. The story and characters were full, but in that driving way that leaves room for a second and a third helping as well.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Read this book! By Madeline Vara Must. Read. Those two words summarize this book in nutshell. Dragonoak is first and foremost a creative, innovative fantasy novel, one that starts out with a relatively simple and familiar premise (knights, dragons, magic), but the rapidly moves toward hinting at turning many of the tired out and old tropes of fantasy on their heads. It’s clear as you read this novel that things are not always what they seem, and I tremendously look forward to what the coming novel will bring. The plot, the characters, the world-building…everything about this novel quickly draws you in, with polished writing to top it all off. In addition to these staple requirements for an excellent read, Dragonoak boasts a host of extremely diverse characters, spotlighting on many queer characters without ever actually making the book and the world and plot about their sexuality or gender. Dragonoak is a world where characters simple are who they are—their sexual preferences or gender identities don’t change how they are perceived by the surrounding inhabitants, which I think in particular makes these books that much more of an amazing read. The characters are defined by rape, or by being lesbian or genderqueer…the story is simple about a greater epic taking place with characters who happen not to fall into heteronormative tropes. If you’re looking for a high fantasy novel filled with knights and dragons and kings and queens and necromancers, with personable characters of intense depth, with plot that pulls you in and grips you for what will happen next, then look no further. This book is well worth the time.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A really fantastic mogai fantasy book By Andrifet A really fantastic mogai fantasy book. It's got great representation - most of the characters are queer women of color. The fantasy setting and magic are standard enough to be able to imagine but full of enough twists to be unique. But what impressed me most about this book was how artfully it unfolded out from something that felt relatively straightforward into a layers of of complexity, depth and surprises. The reader, just like the main character, starts out the story barely knowing anything about the world, its history, or the people inside it. But the farther along you read, the more you learn how there's a lot more to everything than originally anticipated. It's a suspenseful, enthralling and fascinating read.

GRAND CLASSIC SCIENCE-FICTION SPACE ADVENTURE IN THE TRADITION OF ROBERT A. HEINLEIN STRANDED AND SURROUNDED!--First In Bryan Smith's Colonel Landry Space Adventure SeriesIt is the 25th Century. The space cruiser Beagle, under the command of Colonel Kendrick Landry, explores a planet ravaged by war millennia ago, now inhabited by hostile savage humanoids. The Beagle is shot down and grounded by an ancient, mechanized planetary defense network created by an advanced civilization long pre-dating the humanoid savages. The humanoids abduct two women officers: the sexy and sultry Maya Terrazone and the bright but petulant Veronica Winters. Colonel Landry leads a rescue party to find and bring back the two women with the help of Veronica's pet telepathic alien tiger Jones. But if the women still live and Landry rescues them, can his group survive another crossing of the desert terrain-teeming with the savage humanoids-to return to the Beagle? The humanoids are going extinct because long-ago biological warfare killed all the females. Can the Beagle genetic scientists create females to distract the savage male humanoids and permit the crew to make repairs and escape? But even if the Beagle crew makes repairs and regains orbit around the planet, then the ancient planetary defense network may fire upon them a second--and likely fatal--final time.GOLDEN WRITING, MEMORABLE CHARACTERSA lean and flowing prose style. A well-crafted plot. Well-developed characters. The beautiful and temperamental Veronica Winters. The supremely sexual and tough while yet sensitive Maya Terrazone. Colonel Kendrick Landry is a supremely focused, capable, and yet vulnerable man. Still haunted by a near-death event of many years ago. The reader is drawn deep under his skin, and views the distant world of "Sigma Theta III" from his perspective as he struggles desperately to save his crew and himself from becoming hopelessly marooned and dying on the planet. The novel creates a stark vision of determined men and women fighting for survival against overwhelming odds. THE SCIENCE OF FERAL PLANETMuch of the Sci-Fi space adventure of today makes only routine and passing reference to such concepts as faster-than-light space travel and the "beaming" of characters from one location to another. Concepts that were staples of the Golden Age Sci-Fi of the 1950's and 1960's and provided inspiration for much filmography including of course the famous Star Trek franchise. Golden Age Sci-Fi coined the term "astrogation" for navigation in space. Later sci-fi often defaulted to the term "navigator" (e.g. Mr. Sulu in Star Trek). Feral Planet adopts the terms "astrogation" and "astrogator" in part as a tribute to the Sci-Fi Golden Age.Feral Planet gives particular attention to faster than light travel accomplished by way of "space warping" as written about in scientific journals by theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre. The novel provides detail as to how such processes might actually work. A RENAISSANCE OF SPACE OPERAFeral Planet harkens back to Science Fiction's Golden Age of such distinguished writers as Robert A. Heinlein, Poul Anderson, and H. Beam Piper. Yet the novel achieves its own fresh modern originality. Good Sci-Fi "Space Opera" has become a rarity today. But for lovers of the genre Feral Planet marks a fresh new resurgence of an old favorite. The novel is compelling modern Sci-Fi Space Opera at its best. Feral Planet will be a welcome relief for readers tired out of the contemporary vogue clichés of vampires, werewolves, dragons and princesses, galactic empires, and "star wars." FIRST OF A SERIESFeral Planet is the first in the Colonel Landry Space Adventure Series. Four other novels in the series are scheduled for release: --Dome of Slavery --Final Battle --In Search of Kronos--Amira: Warrior Queen Of Crucida

Northern California Science-Fiction Book Review

From the Author EXCERPT FROM FERAL PLANET While exploring a war-ravaged distant planet, the exploratory team of the space cruiser Beagle are unexpectedly grounded and marooned on the planet in the midst of savage and hostile alien natives . . . The exploratory team from the Aurora-launched from the hangar deck and dispatched to the planet's surface in the space cruiser Beagle-had been observing the inhabitants of Sigma Theta III . . . As lush as it might once have been, the planet was now a recovering wasteland. It was craggy and held sparse vegetation and lower animal life forms to barely sustain the planet's dominant species. The dominant species was humanoid and large-up to about three meters tall, broad-chested, and thickly-muscled. Substantially stronger than a man. They had pale greenish skin, heads naturally bald, with yellow eyes . . . The humanoids were extremely territorial as to the land. The Beagle team saw the different groupings of the race turn on one another with unbridled vicious aggression. The bows and arrows and other weapons were used in war-like precision to accomplish repeated skirmishes marked by spear impalements and tomahawk decapitations . . . Aside from territorial hostilities, the planet's humanoid race was becoming extinct. All the tribal members were male. There were no females. Nakamura had explained it to Landry. "There is a virus still extant and detectable in the atmosphere-probably a by-product of biological warfare which contributed to almost destroying the race. It appears that the females had a particular vulnerability to the virus and eventually died out entirely." No more humanoids could be borne. The planet's dominant race was slated for extinction as a final side effect of its long ago final war. Nothing to be done. "Time to leave," Landry said . . . Maya was at the astrogation console on the Beagle. She fired the cruiser's jet propulsion wings. They almost immediately achieved orbit and sought to rendezvous with the Aurora, awaiting their return. All should have been well. Then the Beagle became surrounded by a surge of electro-magnetic energy which-surprisingly enough-was emitted from the planet's surface. She sought, too late, to surround the Beagle with a protective force screen drawn from the cruiser's energy core. Before the protective field could completely surround them, the electro-magnetic surge from the planet had already taken hold . . . For a moment the Beagle hung suspended and buffeted about in orbit. Then all systems were dead, and the cruiser was falling. "We are going to burn up in the atmosphere on re-entry!" Landry shouted. And they would have burned, had not Maya's hands darted across her control boards-based on recollection and instinct in the darkness-and tapped into the auxiliary power supply. She fired the two jet propulsion wings but the Beagle could not regain orbit. It had only enough power to safely re-enter the atmosphere without burn-up. And to break their descent so not to smash up completely on the planet's surface which came rushing up to meet them. They had landed. Beaten and knocked about, but all of them alive                                  .

The non-stop action keeps things going at a fast pace so there's never a dull moment, and the characters are exciting and original with these unique personalities that really capture your interest. It's sci-fi fantasy with a pulse, taking you way beyond the usual cool technology and hot alien offerings. This is a book that will make you think, long after you've set it aside.Kendrick Landry is one of those get-er-done kind of guys but beneath the tough exterior is a real guy who is all too aware of his own mortality. He is given an assignment involving Major Maya Terrazone, a Eurasian Astrogator and Astrophysicist and member of the Lycanthian Polyamory League in New Los Angeles, and Major Veronica Winters, a Caucasian Science Officer and Chief Astrophysicist among other things, and the proud owner of a male Polaris tiger who will be along for the ride. Traveling intergalactic space with a practicing group sex participant and a presumptuous science officer with a telepathic tiger will prove even more of an adventure than he could ever imagine when they crash the Beagle and find themselves stranded on a planet teeming with hostile inhabitants.Bryan Smith has created a fabulously rich world here. From Landry's AI house computer Linda to the warlike, all male inhabitants of Sigma Theta III everything is brought to life with visually descriptive prose. Throughout it all the characters shine through, driving the story as they struggle for survival against all odds. It's a fantastic beginning to a very promising series that will thrill old school and contemporary sci-fi fans alike.

Really - nubile maidens and push-over spacers with lust burning on every page - if you left out the sexploitation, you would have a possibly interesting book by a new author. Otherwise, you have a distracting sex-romp interspersed with some science fiction. I thought this was a little strange having read sci-fi for many years. Not my choice - Col. Landry will be rutting around space without my company as far as I'm concerned.

A few quality reads in the past few years, "The Martian" being one of them, changed my tune and I have really grown to love the sci fi genre and all that it offers. There are some real stinkers out there in this genre though as some can write books that don't make sense or flow properly but this was not my experience at all with author Bryan Smith's fantastic new novel "Feral Planet".The first in the "Colonel Landry Adventure Series", this is the story of a pretty epic space adventure with Colonel Kendrick Landry at its center. Many centuries in the future, Landry's ship, The Beagle, is exploring a desolate planet and is shot down by some old defense technology. They find themselves pretty quickly at a disadvantage on this planet that is inhabited by hostile humanoids, who have managed to kidnap two female ships officers. It is up to Landry to not only retrieve these two lovely ladies but also to find a way off of the planet.I loved the adventure that was set up here that began pretty much immediately. As with a fantasy novel, sci fi set on a remote planet requires a good deal of world building and I thought that Smith did a fantastic job with this - vividly describing both the landscape and the inhabitants of the planet. The characters were relatable and I feel quite invested in this crew - so much so that I am anxious to continue the adventure in the next books in this series.

David's Ghost is a compelling plot featuring a clique of teenagers led by Megan, a ghost whisperer. Jealousies and back stabbings within the group do not prevent them from joining in a balls-to-the-wall investigation of the disappearance of a friend. This book will appeal to young adults in the mood for fresh paranormal. Great summer read. Download Kindle version now.

It is surprisingly well developed for a first novel. The story gets off to a good start, moves along in sometimes unpredictable ways and is thoroughly enjoyable. One of the strengths of the writer is her use of humor. She also has a good feel for young readers and the kinds of things that cause them angst. Consistent and readable. Give it a go.

By Bob Duckles Rita Toma has written a gripping mystery-thriller in which teenagers attempt to set the record straight on a murder twenty years before. In doing so, she explores the experiences of today's youth, dealing with parents, other adults, and the hormones that complicate their relationships with the opposite sex.Read this summer adventure of Megan and her new friends in a Phoenix summer. You'll enjoy it.
