By PJ Colando, author of STASHES From Benghazi to Larkhana, Pakistan to Eagle, Idaho...to Irvine, CA, my hometown, highly-charged action surges, moving plausibly on each page. Steve Jackson has written a highly relatable tale that is chillingly real and well-ployed. While the plot centers on a high tech heist, this decidedly-less-than-savvy reader understood every aspect, turning pages as swiftly as possible to learn what happened next. I delighted at the cool repartee between the protagonist and his best friend, matched by a kick-ass female agent. I began to see the movie spool out in my mind as I read...better than Bond.Take this book to read on your next airline trip. While meals are no longer served on a plane, 'law, order, and justice', will be when you read this book. Zeus's values prevail.

Engrossing cyber thriller By Amazon Customer Action adventures, sci fi, and techie tales are typically not my thing, but I could not set Payload aside until I had finished it. Mr. Jackson's combination of complex plot, straightforward prose, and lightning-paced action kept me totally engaged from beginning to end. Fans of Stephen King, T. Jefferson Parker, and Robert Ludlum will find this book a must-read. I look forward to future works by this exciting new author.....Mary Heiney

Anyone possessing it could eventually control the world. Nick King, a young tech genius, has created the software for the United States, but other parties get wind of it and will kill to get it. Before long rogue CIA agents, neo-Nazis, Al Qaeda, and Mexican drug lords are in the chase.Nick has also devoted his life to killing a terrorist named Saleh, who engineered the 1983 bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut, which killed his parents when he was just a boy. Nick’s best friend is Dean Wright, also a computer whiz, who helps Nick in the two goals of cyber weapons and revenge. Dean also tries to keep Nick’s impulsiveness from getting him in trouble, though Nick usually does what he wants anyway.Nick meets an intriguing, mysterious, and gorgeous NSA agent, Tanya Rose, who also has revenge on her mind. Her brother was killed during the 2012 terrorist attack on the US Embassy in Benghazi. The electricity between Nick and Tanya starts flirtatiously, turns into suspicion and antagonism, and then into romance.Mr. Jackson runs Nick, Dean, and Tanya at breakneck speed through scenes in Southern California, the Middle East, and Mexico, constantly in peril. Many of the scenes relate to recent actual Middle East situations. The book is well-plotted, the main characters are well-defined, and the novel is easy to read and hard to put down.

I have traveled the world, and still, for me, the forests of southeastern Alaska are the most beautiful place I have ever known. What else? I live beside a creek. By Amazon Customer I want to thank the author, Tim Garvin, for sharing his childhood with me! Such rich stories. Every child hood is rich in its own way, I suppose, but these six stories take us into Nature and the life-lessons it provides, in a way that not all of us have in our memories. Each story is unique in its arc and characters, but all of them have both action and the kinds of experiences that bring growth of character as a result of that action. I thrilled to Sam's courage as he ascended a dangerous precipice to safe someone; laughed uproariously at El and Al, two neighbor boys who seem to have been of some barbarian stock; appreciated the early male/female dynamics with Irene, another neighbor; and gained a feeling of this wonderful community, the homes separated from one another by, I think, several miles, but still thinking of one another as neighbors, there in the wilderness 20-some miles north of Juneau, "whales in our front yard and bears in our back yard," as the author says in his afterword. He also says that he's traveled widely and atill regards the forests of southern Alaska as the most beautiful place on earth. Having been in, I think, a similar terrain briefly (British Columbia", I can picture this lush environment. What a place it must have been for children! And now, having read the stories, I feel I've been there too, a little bit! The comparison with Jack London is too easy, and impossible since I haven' read London extensively...but I feel KILLER WHALE ROCK gives me Alaska at least as much as London would.

HILL I gather this is intended as juvenile reading, but I can't imagine anyone who would not enjoy it. I lived several years in the same part of Alaska, and the author captures the magic of the Alaskan wilderness beautifully. The main characters are children who are free to explore the seasonal wonders of the temperate rainforest, with its fauna (like bears) and its flora (like devils club). It's a great introduction to the vast loveliness and richness of the region. As with other readers, I could have happily continued for many, many more pages.

It is an exciting tale of two young brothers living in the temperate rainforest of Alaska. The author draws a beautiful picture of the magnificence and capriciousness of nature. The relationship of the two brothers is a mixture of competition, humor and tenderness. The episodic chapters are filled with adventures of the wild and humorous situations with the neighboring children.This book would jump off the shelf in any school library.

As a white male planting a church in Los Angeles, I can say that the Spirit has used this book to break my heart to intentionally plant a multiethnic church to demonstrate the Gospel of reconciliation to a watching world. Since reading The HD Leader, I feel like I am seeing the Scriptures more clearly and accurately. Similar to when I started seeing the Gospel on each page of the Scriptures, I now feel like I am seeing God's desire for the nations reconciled under one roof for His glory. I appreciate Derwin's heart to help lead pastors like myself to see a more beautiful and comprehensive view of Jesus and His good news. I highly recommend this deeply-theological, yet highly practical book on planting and building a multiethnic church for God's glory and our joy.

About the Author Born and raised in Michigan, I spent summers at the lake, swimming, catching frogs, and chasing fireflies, winters building things out of cardboard and construction paper, writing stories, and dreaming of faraway places. Since I didn't make honors English in High School, I thought I couldn't write. So I started hanging out in the art room. The day I borrowed a camera, my love affair with photography began. Long before the birth of the pixel, I was exposing real silver halides to light and marveling at the magic of an image appearing on paper under a red light.  After college, I freelanced in commercial photography studios. During the long days of rigging strobes, one story haunted me. As happens in life though, before I could put it to words, I was possessed by another dream--to be a wildlife photographer. I trekked through the woods to find loons, grizzly bears, whales, and moose. Then, for six years, I put my heart and soul into publishing a nature magazine, Whisper in the Woods. But it was not meant to be my magnum opus. This time, my attention was drawn skyward. I'd always been fascinated by the aurora borealis, shimmering in the night sky, but now my focus went beyond, to the cosmos, to wonder about our place in the universe.  In the spring of 2010, I sat down at the computer, started typing words, and breathed life into a curious boy named Kiran. Together, in our quest for truth, Kiran and I have explored the mind and spirit. Our journey has taken us to places of new perspective. Alas, the answers always seem just beyond our grasp, as elusive as a firefly on a warm autumn night. Most recently, my focus has shifted to more pressing issues--imperiled wildlife. With the Poppy McVie series, I hope to bring some light into the shadowy underworld of black market wildlife trade, where millions of wild animals are captured or slaughtered annually to fund organized crime.  IT. The things you might learn are woven into a great story line with a strong female character enjoying a bit of romance on the side. Poppy reminds me a little bit of Stephanie Plum in Janet Evonovich's books. Although Poppy is not quite as hapless as Stephanie and is much more in charge. I've already pre-ordered the next installment. If you care about animals and like strong female characters involved in some suspenseful adventure you'll like this book. Kimberli Bindschatel is a new author and one I think we will be lucky to hear more from. Bonus - all the proceeds from the sale of this book go to fund wildlife protection.

I was pleased to come across a female MC who was not over the top snarky and always laughing or cracking jokes in the face of real and imminent danger. Poppy McVie is a real character: quick-thinking, smart, resourceful, maybe too quick to overstep authority, but only doing that because she's passionate about doing her job in the best possible way.Poppy is a newly-minted US Fish & Wildlife Service agent whose youthful exuberance and passion is tested in a life-or-death undercover mission. She encounters romantic complications with two men on the mission, one a fellow agent, the other a good-looking animal rights activist. Her attractions are just enough to threaten the success of the undercover operation, but not overplayed so much that she looks like a love-starved groupie.The premise is fresh as well. Animal abuse and exploitation is more or less forgotten in this country but impacts many other countries in a big way with regard to animal poaching. The issue is fairly presented and I never felt any author intrusion with regard to a certain point of view on the poaching topic, just Poppy's innate love of all animals and her desire to protect them.Pacing is excellent, with constant motion and crisp dialogue. Since this is the first book in a series, I imagine Poppy will be fleshed out completely in later books. She's off to a running start.

A U.S. Wildlife Service badge coupled with an unbridled passion for the imperiled creatures of our world sends her headlong into adventure and adversity - a "no-holds-barred" kinda gal. Refreshingly (and reassuringly, too) she maintains a healthy sense of humor, a heap of common sense and a vulnerable heart throughout professional and personal entanglements. Tropical Affair is a terrific read that left me longing for the next adventure.

About the Author

Timothy Keller is the founder and senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Reason for God and The Prodigal God. He has also mentored young urban church planters and pastors in New York and other cities through Redeemer City to City, which has helped launch over 200 churches in 35 global cities to date.

Kathy Keller was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and attended Allegheny College. She graduated from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1975 with her MA in Theological Studies. She and her husband, Tim, married one semester before graduation. West Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Virginia, extended a call for Tim to be a three-month interim pastor while they searched for someone more experienced. Nine years and three sons later, the Kellers moved to Philadelphia, where Tim taught at Westminster Theological Seminary and Kathy began work as an editor at Great Commission Publications.

In 1989 they moved to Manhattan to plant Redeemer Presbyterian Church. As staff were added, Kathy focused on the Communication Committee. She is now the Assistant Director of Communication and Media and the editor at Redeemer. She also writes and speaks along with Tim. Their three sons are grown and married, and producing amazing grandchildren. They and their families are all members of Redeemer.

Needs the DVD lessons to be useful By Mallory I order 2 of these because my husband and I are going through The Meaning of Marriage in a small group study. I thought this would be good supplemental material. However, a lot of the content has to do with the DVD content. A lot of small group study's can be found on YouTube, but not these. The book has content to do on your own, with your small group, and with your spouse. I wish we had access to the videos without having to purchase the DVD. I will be trying to return them, because they have little value to us. Additionally, the sections are split differently than my small group has allocated them. If your small group is doing the DVD study with the book, this would be a great resource.

The study guide really helps you in using the material you read in the book. It also complements the video series quite well.

And to embrace the freedom that this understanding brings. I think maybe having "beauty" in the title makes the reader think this is somehow a shallow, easy read. Not true. The author looks deeply at many aspects of "beauty" - not just physical. She understands how women struggle with identity and being enough.I think this would be a great book to read with a group - to give each other courage to embrace the truth.

Life-changing By Alica Jolie Pascua If you have struggled with body image, this book is especially powerful (although really there is only a couple of chapters on this issue). The whole premise is to come to understand how much Jesus loves you, so that you will be able to love and accept yourself (and it does cover way more than just body image, but for me, that is why I chose to read this book). I would highly recommend it; it's actually been life-changing for me and caused me to have some huge break-throughs.

By Richard Jackson First an admission: I was able to get an advance reader's copy of RB and the E of W for review and have not read the first part of this series. But I can comment on what I found.I liked the writing, a curious mixture of British (arse instead of ass, railway for railroad) and a pseudo Victorian manner of speech. Also, once the story got into the main thread, the descriptions and action were very good.However, the first almost one third of the book involved desperate struggles with highly unlikely beasts (or "beasties" as the book has it). One is required to suspend disbelief in science fiction/steam punk but I just could not accept packs of four eyed saber toothed monsters on an ice plateau near Tehachapi, California. Predators need prey, and there would be no herds of buffalo or equivalent with no grazing to be had. The same applies to the kraken, a huge winged beastie apparently existing at 11,000 ft. This first part of the book seemed to be superfluous, and only there to fill up space with a long tale of desperate struggle.And then the injured characters have long dream-like flashbacks and visions. Mystical stuff which I did not care for.There is also lots of girlie stuff. Buckle is surrounded by several attractive women and there is a reasonable amount of "romantic tension" without its leading to anything. I can handle that, but descriptions of woman putting on corsets???? I say!The last part of the book has excellent action, it's no kind of spoiler to tell that its a long drawn out airship battle. I enjoyed that and would have given this book 4 stars, but then I asked myself, "Am I hooked enough to go for the next episode?" Since the answer was "No" I felt only three stars was appropriate.There are probably hordes of Buckle fans really annoyed at this review and to them I say, "Enjoy!"

By EA Solinas Steampunk novels are more fun when something extra is inserted into the story -- space travel, zombies, cloud squirrels, et cetera.And there is a LOT of extra stuff in "Romulus Buckle & The Engines of War" -- a futuristic, icy version of Earth with sabretoothed tigers, steam-powered airships, and plenty of aliens. It's a pulpy, piratey kind of adventure story, with lots of fun action scenes -- but Richard Ellis Preston Jr. does have a distracting tendency to ramble.Romulus and a grievously wounded Max are stranded in the Devil's Punchbowl, with wild beasts trying to eat them. But they have no time to rest when they are rescued, because Romulus has discovered a shocking fact -- it was the Founders, not the Imperials, who stole his sister. The only hope of stopping the Founders is by uniting the various disparate groups against them.But there are obstacles in the way of the Pneumatic Airship -- vast sky krakens, political squabbling, saboteurs, and a shocking revelation about one of Romulus' own crew. As a war starts to rev up between the Founders and the other clans, the airship's crew finds itself on an ambassadorial mission that turns into a battle."Romulus Buckle & The Engines of War" is basically steampunk pulp -- which I mean in the most affectionate way possible. It's a colorful, fast-moving story with plenty of vivid scenes (giant sabretoothed tigers with four green glowy eyes!) and exciting action scenes with muskets and cutlasses. It's a rollicking ride, sort of like steampunk pirates without the theft.The one problem is Preston's writing style. He packs in a lot of solid dialogue and vivid descriptions, which are lots of fun to read. But he has an unfortunate tendency to write in long, rambling sentences. Some of them are as long as a small paragraph, and could be easily divided into two or three smaller ones.But if you can overlook that easily-fixed flaw, the characters are a likable bunch. Buckle is a rough'n'tumble, hard-drinking, courageous captain, and his rough edges and flaws are enough to distract you from the fact that all women are hot for him. The regal half-Martian Max and the mysterious Sabrina are both nicely rounded out, although their flashbacks can be a bit intrusive (did Sabrina's REALLY need to be in the middle of a kraken attack?).The second Romulus Buckle is a fun, wild ride with plenty of steampunk flair, as long as the lengthy, rambling sentences don't bother you. Enjoyable steampunk pulp.

Wiles Parker If you read Romulus Buckle & the City of the Founders and liked it, you'll probably like the second installment, Romulus Buckle & the Engines of War. Ditto if you weren't really a fan of book one you probably will feel similar about book two. The same problems plague this book as the first: overly descriptive passages that actually do not tell you a whole lot, the occasional repetitive dialogue (though thankfully less of it), and a general lack of plot despite the thickness of the book and action sequences.To be fair, Preston Jr. does drop some more hints as to what is to come. He also has a tendency to drop said hints then completely make them disappear only to reappear later after you've forgotten about them. The action travels from point A to point B, but often in such a long winded fashion that I often felt like I forgot what point A was and wondered why Romulus and co. were heading to point B again. It's strangely episodic in the way a film or television show ought to be, but a book should not. Not that the action is hard to follow, there just is not enough character development aside from basically saying that just about every female character in Romulus crew is basically in love with him. (Oops, spoilers?). In short, there is a lot of surface stuff going on but not a lot of depth as if the actors are missing to flesh out the characters.Could be worse, I guess. As far as book two goes, it's basically just a light read much like book one was, though I did have fun in this second book playing the "I wonder where he pulled that historical person's name from" game. If you read other steampunk, particularly the alternative history variety by authors such as Mark Hodder and Scott Westerfeld, you'll likely recognize some of the character inspirations.

A love story set in a unique locations.I recommend this story to readers who like a M/M romance with a little adventure, drama in an exotic location. The characters are fresh, uplifting and the story leaves the reader with a good feeling.Personally, I enjoyed the book. Being older and knowing what it is like to be considered out of the mainstream of the LGBTQI community within the US, I had a lot of fun seeing how popular one can be in other locations.

The author also paints a lovely picture of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. This is an easy read, very little angst, lots of adventure and the romance is just right. You also get to learn about a new culture. I was pleasantly surprised and I look forward to more titles from this author.

I'm so glad I finally chose it.The book is well written and the characters are interesting and fully developed. The secondary characters are also interesting. I enjoyed the humor and teasing between the two main characters and found myself chuckling quite often.The descriptions of the stories locations are well done, informative, and added to the overall storyline. I've been to Penang, and I've been to a palm oil and rubber plantation in Sumatra as a guest of the manager and his family. so I was pleased to be reacquainted by Mr. Powers description. It brought back some very nice memories of both locations.There were no dragging sections in the story and I had no reason to start skimming. The sexual content wasn't erotica or explained in explicit detail, but there was lots of romance along with adventure, a bit of danger, and intrigue. I found myself smiling when I reached the end. This is an overall well done and satisfying book. Buy it-you'll like it.
