I really enjoyed it.Much in this story is accurately based on the way things really are, and it would be nice if these things weren't really that way. Then there are the many things in this story that are purely fictional, and you wish there was more of this part that was true. There is also the question of what is right and what is wrong - and where do you draw the line between them.I think it will appeal to most everyone who reads it.

Janie Kayrs has known Zane almost her whole life. He was her friend in the dream world. She trusted him. But that was before he kidnapped her, spiriting her away to an isolated cabin to learn what her dreams never told her. Like how dangerous he looks. How he got on the wrong side of the negotiating table. And how much sexier he is in real life....

Zane is a battle-hardened warrior, used to command and solitude. But Janie has drawn him from the minute they met. His need for her could destroy everything he's worked for, but the risk is too sweet not to take it.

They call her the Chosen One. But when it comes down to the questions of peace or war, life or death, safety or passion, it will be Janie who makes the choice....

Love is about to start conquering....

I could hardly wait to read Janie and Zane's story. We've been seeing bits and pieces of it throughout the series and this book is the climax the arc. And what a climax it was! We got to see all the characters from the previous books. Everyone had a role to fill, and they did it marvelously. While I had my guess about who, and what, Zane would be, Ms. Zanetti kept the twists and turns coming. This was one continuous adventure. I am very impressed how she tied things up. I was left feeling satisfied, especially with all the little insights into our favorite couples the epilogue gave us. And then she gave us a hint for maybe another book later on! Ah, good times. There was humor, pages of intensity, moments of joy, paragraphs of fear...and it was all twisted up in a wonderful reading package. I read it in one sitting. Yes, it was that good. We have all been waiting for the culmination of the story, and it was worth the wait. But then she was mean. After the end of Marked, she gives us a teaser for her next series, The Realm Enforcers. I need it NOW!I highly recommend this book. In fact, you really can't go wrong with any of her series. Yes, she's that good.*Thank you, Netgalley and Kensington, for the opportunity to read Marked.

Like so many other fans of the Dark Protectors series, I have been waiting anxiously for Janie's story. We've been teased with bits and pieces for years. We have known her since she was just four years old; we've followed her as she has become more powerful and as she has come closer and closer to fulfilling her destiny. We've caught glimpses of her connections to Zane and Kalin. And it's all led up to this. I am getting excited all over again just thinking about it.The story begins with the big peace talks among all of the supernatural factions and it's there that Janie, Zane, and Kalin all meet in person for the very first time. And we finally learn who --and what-- Zane really is. From their very first interaction, Rebecca Zanetti drives home the differences between how everyone is in the dreamworld versus reality. Everything is no longer hazy and hopeful. Zane is dark and deadly and Janie has to quickly come to terms with the fact that the Zane of her fantasies is a flesh and blood man with his own loyalties and baggage that are part of the package.I love that there is more to Zane than meets the eye. He is just a touch more caveman than my taste generally dictates. (The only thing in the whole book I would have changed was the obligatory spanking "to teach her a lesson.") But overall, he is not nearly as overbearing as the heroes in the early books of the series. I appreciate that he gives Janie credit where she's due and he doesn't ignore what she can bring to the table. The romance was 100% satisfying, both emotionally and sexually. But there is just as much to be said about the larger story arc. This book is the culmination of all the fighting, scheming and atrocities among the demons, kurjans, witches, vampires and shifters. It's positively explosive and it went in a direction I never saw coming. It was fantastic. I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning to end. There is a ton of action and it's filled with twists and turns. The ending is 100% satisfying in every way. Not only is the main arc wonderfully resolved and the romance full of HEA goodness, we get to spend some time with every single couple we have fallen in love with over the course of the series. I can't think of any way she could have done this better. Fans are going to love this book. I know I sure did.Rating: A

By angelblue240 I have been a huge fan of the Dark Protectors series from day one and Marked was a fantastic conclusion to an amazing series, and as much as I hate to see it end I wouldn't change a thing. And now comes the hard part, writing a review without any spoilers. I don't want to ruin a moment of the book for you because it's going to take you on a roller coaster ride that you won't forget!Janie Kayrs has been meeting Zane in her dreams since they were children. And although I was pretty confident that they would end up together, I wasn't sure how Kalin was going to factor in.Zane was arrogant, possessive, stubborn, protective and the best freaking alpha male that I have read about in a long time! Janie was the one prophesied about, a human girl with powerful visions that the different factions wanted to either protect or kill. And even though she was a human surrounded by supernaturals it came down to her saving them all.Virus 27 is still around wrecking havoc on the mates but it has taken a sinister twist during the peace talks that put into motion something that I did not expect. My stomach was in knots the entire time and just when you thought that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel.... bam... it just gets infinitely worse. All I can say is that there was some seriously ugly crying going on near the end.Get your tissues ready and maybe a glass of wine or three to help calm your nerves because you're going to need it once you start reading it. Marked is packed full of action, passion, conflict, tenderness and tears and has exceeded all of my expectations for a finale to this phenomenal series.*I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Her time with Andrew seems surreal. Until he knocks on her doorstep.Andrew must decide what's best for his heart, and he follows it until he reaches Abby's apartment. Boy, what a whirlwind decision that was! Romantic, out-of-the-blue, spontaneous, sweet! I died when Abby & Andrew got back together.. But it wasn't long until something mysterious and sinister attempts to break their bond. It looks like Andrew Carrington got a dark little secret... And Abby must find a way to make sure she stays alive. My goodness! Bella Love-Wins is killing me! This is the best book yet in the Billionaire Romance Redemption Series.. I thought Abby & Andrew's romantic tryst wouldn't come to a halt. While I know the real score about Andrew's past, Abby isn't, which makes this series more exciting than ever! We can't allow a dark menacing rumor affect us, can we? But with the way things are going, I don't know how Abby could see past through this. Bella, you are one wicked girl, I need to read book 4 now!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I really like this series BUT... By Laurie N It is really one really good, fun book not four. And getting book 1 as a freebie is misleading. The first book is free. But it and the following two volumes end on cliffhangers. So, the free story embed up costing almost $9 . I would not normally spend this amount on a romance. But, in favour of the book,I liked the characters and the story. I just wish I'd paid less...something like$6 would have been better, especially since book 3 is mostly only sex without much development of the stories or characters.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Awesome Read! By Donna feibusch I enjoyed reading Cabin Glow: A New Adult and College Romance (The Billionaire Romance), all about Abby & Andrew Carrington. Abby and her friends left the cabin and drove to San Fransisco to get back to college, after their week long blizzard stuck at a cabin/ mansion in Lake Tahoe. Abby hadn't been back more than two hours when their was a knock on her door, it was Andrew, he missed her. The author wrote an interesting story that has spanned the entire series, and all the characters have made the series come to life! In this part Andrew goes to San Fransisco because one of the professors asked him to come and teach a few lectures while he's out of the country. Of course, it's a win win since Abby lives their and they can get together and learn more about each other, and of course take care of their sexual attraction as well. Abby & Andrew are in love with each other but each is waiting for the other to say it, when it finally happens neither one is surprised, they are both ecstatic. Can't wait to read the next part!

"The Secret Sharer" begins with the anonymous narrator — the recently appointed captain of an unnamed ship — anchored in the Gulf of Siam (what is now called the Gulf of Thailand). As the Captain stands on the deck, alone, he soaks in the sunset and silence of the sea. He feels like a stranger to his new command, the ship, and his crew. At supper that night, the Captain remarks that he saw the masts of a ship that must be anchored inside a nearby group of islands. The Second Mate tells him that the ship is the Sephora, from Liverpool, carrying a cargo of coal. As a goodwill gesture toward the crew, who have been working hard the last two days, the Captain announces that he will take the anchor watch until 1:00 a.m., something usually not done by a ship's captain. During the anchor watch, while the hands are asleep, the Captain begins to pull in the rope side ladder, which was lowered for a tugboat man to come on board and deliver the crew's mail. When he begins to pull it in, he feels a jerk in the ropes, and surprised, leans over the deck to investigate. He sees a naked man in the water, holding the bottom of the ladder. The man introduces himself as Leggatt, and the Captain fetches him some clothes (one of his sleeping suits). Leggatt explains that he was the Sephora's chief mate and that he accidentally killed an insolent fellow crewman seven weeks ago. The Captain takes him into his stateroom and further learns that Leggatt was kept under arrest in his cabin until he escaped and swam to the rope ladder where the Captain discovered him. He sank his clothes so the Sephora's crew would think he had committed suicide by drowning. The Captain feels an unexplainable affinity to Leggatt, often referring to him as "my double" or "second self." The Captain tells Leggatt that he has only been in charge for two weeks and feels as much of a stranger on the ship as Leggatt himself. He agrees to hide Leggatt in his stateroom. The Sephora's captain soon arrives in his search for the escaped murderer. He searches the ship, but Leggatt remains hidden, thanks to the maneuverings of the Captain. The Sephora's captain states that he will have to report Leggatt as a suicide when his ship arrives home. The Captain and Leggatt share their relief at not having been caught. As the Captain's ship begins its voyage home, the Captain grows more nervous about the possibility of the crew discovering Leggatt on board. On the fourth day out, the steward almost stumbles upon Leggatt when he delivers the Captain's coat to his stateroom. Leggatt tells the Captain that he must maroon him amongst some islands, because he knows he cannot return to England and face prison or the gallows. The Captain reluctantly agrees. As the ship approaches Koh-ring, an island, the Captain orders the crew to steer the ship close to the shore. They protest that such a move is unsafe, but the Captain is determined to give Leggatt a chance to swim to safety. After stealing away to his stateroom and shaking Leggatt's hand, the Captain continues to have the ship steered close to the shore, despite all the protests of his terrified crew. Leggatt jumps off the deck and swims to safety, the Captain successfully maneuvers the ship out of danger, and wishes Leggatt luck in finding his "new destiny."

The Secret Sharer, by Joseph Conrad, World literature

About the Author Joseph Conrad was a Polish novelist who lived most of his life in Britain and didn't learn English until age 21. The young Conrad lived an adventurous life involving gunrunning and political conspiracy, and apparently had a disastrous love affair that plunged him into despair. He served 16 years in the merchant navy.In 1894, at age 36, Conrad reluctantly gave up the sea, partly because of poor health and partly because he had decided on a literary career.

By Martin Asiner In THE SECRET SHARER, Joseph Conrad posits an interesting choice for the Captain protagonist: should he follow maritime law and return a self-confessed murderer to his ship to face justice or should he allow his personal feelings to intrude and harbor a fugitive and let him escape? On the surface, this seems like a fairly routine choice, but in the world of Joseph Conrad no choices are ever easy. Readers who come to this novella from HEART OF DARKNESS are well aware that Conrad likes to place hesitancies in the minds of readers, most of which are couched in symbolic language which suggest a tapping into their psyches. In the case of the Captain, his choice is confounded by his perception of the man Leggatt who climbs aboard his ship. As the Captain sees Leggatt, he sees a man who is described in terms of one who is physically incomplete. Leggatt appears to be headless and as he ascends the rope from water to deck, Conrad's imagery suggests a watery re-birth. The Captain sees Leggatt and in the pages that follow calls him terms that circle back to himself: my double, my secret sharer, and my other self. It is clear that in Leggatt the Captain sees more than just a little bit of himself. They went to the same school with the Captain graduating only a few years prior. At this point, Conrad suggests that the Captain's decision not to hand Leggatt over to justice may not be simply a matter of identifying with Leggatt on a superficial level in that they merely share some common traits. With the Captain's heavily symbolic language, Conrad probes more deeply in the Captain's psyche and by extension in the reader's psyche by suggesting that the Captain's willingness to protect Leggatt even at the cost of his own career and the safety of his ship and crew lies in his subconscious linking of himself to Leggatt. For the Captain to hand over Leggatt to the law and to possible execution would be tantamount to being complicit in his own doom. To further complicate matters, on an even more subconscious level, Conrad raises the possibility that there is no Leggatt at all and that their entire relationship, replete with conversation, mutual interaction, and hiding Leggatt in his bathroom may have existed only within the Captain's mind. If this latter interpretation holds water, then in order for the Captain to maintain the illusion of Leggatt's existence, he had to act as if Leggatt truly existed, even to the point of endangering his ship by approaching too close to shore to allow Leggatt to jump off and swim to safety to a nearby isle. Conrad leaves the reader to ponder the state of mind of the Captain. When the Captain sees a floating hat at the end when Leggatt has jumped ship, that hat serves to remind the Captain and possibly the reader as well that the difference between reality and illusion may be no more significant than whether an abandoned hat floats or sinks in a stormy sea.

Even though it is really short there is a large amount of importance in every line. Whether its symbolism or some type of hidden meaning its there and it is what makes the book great. Conrad puts you in the mind of of his characters and you seem to experience what they are going through. It gives you the sense that you are right there on the boat with the captain and his hidden passenger. You feel as if your the only one in on there little secret and if they are found out you will be too. Conrad then puts so much description into his characters you can actually get a feeling of what they look like and the way they act. The similarities between the two main characters is so great that at points you can't see a difference between them. This constantly keeps you on your toes and thinking about what is going on. What makes the book though is the symbolism and how much meaning each little thing holds. You can read a paragraph and just take it s a regular story or you can think more into it and it holds so much more. It almost completely changes the way you look at what is happening. This book is definitely worth reading. It makes you appreciate the genius that some people hold in there writing abilities. You will come out of this book with a changed perspective on the way things happen in life.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. creepy, wonderful By David Myers Conrad knew how to pack a punch in a small number of pages. He knew how to evoke dread. And he knew how to tell a story of the sea. It's not as involved or incredible as Heart of Darkness (but few things written in the English language have ever been)-- this little story about a stowaway is tightly told. Still, it will leave you with an appreciation of the abilities of a master.

Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan is called on to solve the coldest of cases in this thriller from CWA Diamond Dagger winner Catherine Aird Berebury, England, did not have an easy go of it during the Second World War. This quaint Victorian town was destroyed when the Nazis dropped bomb after bomb on its perfect gardens and neat hedges. After three decades of disarray, the town council has finally begun reconstructing what’s left. All throughout Berebury, the sounds of hammers and saws drone on. But on this particular day, the noise stops.   In the crater of a bomb site, a skeleton has been found. While its presence there isn’t unusual—hundreds died in bombing raids throughout England—the manner in which the pregnant girl met her end is sinister enough that Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan and his assistant, Detective Constable Crosby, are called to the scene. The cause of death, it seems, was not the blast, but a bullet to the spine.   Inspector Sloan is the best there is when it comes to cracking the most complex cases. But can he piece together a murder that’s been buried for more than a quarter century?

A Late Phoenix (The C. D. Sloan Mysteries), by Catherine Aird

About the Author Catherine Aird is the author of twenty-odd crime novels and story collections, most of which feature Detective Chief Inspector C. D. Sloan. She holds an honorary M. A. from the University of Kent and was made an M.B.E. Her more recent works include "Amendment of Life", "Past Tense" and "Losing Ground". She lives in England.

From AudioFile This entry in Aird's popular C.D. Sloan British mystery series was published in 1971. Some of the characters who become prominent in later works in the series do not appear, but Inspector Sloan, Constable Crosby, and Dr. Dabb are sufficient for the present. The action involves an old murder discovered at a WWII bomb site, followed by a new and related murder. Robin Bailey seems to perfectly understand his cast of characters in this endearing and entertaining series. His C.D. Sloan is wry, patient, and ever so slightly stolid. His Constable Crosby the enthusiastic, yet thoughtless young idiot with whom Crosby must work. His Dr. Dabb deep-voiced and business-like as he cuts up the cadavers. Bailey's pacing reflects Aird's gentle humor and highlights her sly social commentary. Well done. R.E.K. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A dead body rising from the ashes By Michele L. Worley I recommend Robin Bailey's unabridged narration. As always, he's the perfect reader for an English cozy mystery, and a fine actor. He can slip into and out of the voices of young constable Crosby, an old man whose lungs were damaged by poison gas in WWI, an overweight woman with a bad leg in a doctor's office, and many more, all without missing a beat. The Battle of Britain, of course, didn't just involve the bombing of London; even thirty years later, Lamb Lane in Berebury is still a bomb site. (The council and the owners have been fighting for years about the building plans.) Now that everyone has their act together, the bomb rubble is being cleared - and the excavator hits just the wrong (or right) place: the skeleton of a pregnant woman was buried on the site, dating back to the war. Even before the autopsy, Dr. Dabbe doesn't buy the theory that a bomb would have laid her out so neatly with no visible crush injuries, so Sloan is stuck with an investigation that the superintendent would be just as happy to write off as 'historical' rather than 'possible murder', but there are suggestive points: the absence of any identification - or wedding ring - on the body, for one. Other missing pieces include a hue-and-cry for a missing person (there wasn't any) and the required notification of the local archeologists about the construction (the notice never arrived - if it was ever sent). And when the archaeologists had arrived in spite of everything, someone had moved their pegs out of the danger zone.Inspector Sloan, beginning his digging while the contractors are banned from continuing theirs, turns up various interesting tidbits: the memories of the older members of the Berebury force and the firefighting and rescue teams of the time, as well as the receptionist of the doctor's office across from the site (the old doctor himself died a few months ago). The Waite brothers, sons of the old couple who used to live in the bombed house, both left after the war, but only Harold inherited it, and promptly sold the site; Leslie, a black sheep, was disinherited. Why? And why did the self-made buyer want it but let it get bogged down in planning fights for so many years - or did someone else engineer the delay? And how and why did the clearance plans finally get approved?Apart from interesting sidelights on living through bombing, not once but over and over again, we have Miss Tyrell, breaking in the new Dr. Latimer as the late Dr. Tarde's successor, and William Latimer's own attempts to find his feet in Calleshire's medical community as a first-generation doctor.

My only complaint is that they are too short. I can finish them in about an hour and I for one would like more time to savour her craftsmanship. In this book Cheif Inspector Sloane is taxed with finding the identity of a skeleton that had been shot 25 to 30 years ago. Murder was definitely the cause of death in this case, so Sloan is on the hunt again for a murderer. I think the best part of a Catherine Aird book is the wry humour, and of course, the inimitable Leeyes (Sloane's superior officer). While Sloane is trying to identify his 25-year-old corpse, and to determine whether or not it was indeed murder, another very recent body turns up. What is the connecting thread between the two murders? Catherine Aird is a true delight!

Now as this is the very last book of all this series that began in the long long ago, perhaps you may like to hear something of the man who thought over every one of the twenty-five, for fear lest a story should creep in which he did not wish his little boys and girls to read. He was born when nobody thought of travelling in anything but a train—a very slow one—or a steamer. It took a great deal of persuasion to induce him later to get into a motor and he had not the slightest desire to go up in an aeroplane—or to possess[viii] a telephone

Tears of an Innocent God invites the reader to explore the ways of the One who would have us perceive, listen, and love as Christ did, and still does: not by imitation, but through a gradual inner transformation. The book outlines two kinds of contemplation, the first involving activity on the part of the person seeking intimacy with God. Contemplation of the second kind is sudden, unexpected: a gift of God unmediated by the senses, intellect, memory, or imagination. The author speaks of the healing, transformative power of inner silence, and of the mysterious Round Dance of the Trinity. The author recalls his near death experience at ten, and the time when God suddenly appeared to protect him, minutes before he would have been murdered. Brother Elias relives his long sojourn on an island off the coast of Spain, where he meditated for many hours each day. After every chapter, he describes practices related to deep inner prayer, and to skillful ways of dealing with harmful thoughts and feelings. Brother Elias draws attention to the goal shared by all human beings: to become kindness incarnate, while living Christs paradigm of radical equality and inclusivity. He stresses the importance of becoming a whole person by integrating the inner with the outer sides of life. Tears of an Innocent God explores deeper levels of faith and ways to pray with gentle strength.

I was delighted by Elias Marechal’s previous book By Art Anderson I was delighted by Elias Marechal’s previous book, Dancing Madly Backwards, which I often kept by my bedside. I am even more enchanted with his present book, Tears of an Innocent God, which is now by my bedside, too. Elias writes in a dialect that is common to all souls; and, yet, it is as if he is speaking only to me. That is the gift and power of his writing. As I begin to pick up the thread of meaning in each portion of the various conversations that comprise his book, I find strange, new ways to understand many of the mysteries of my own life that suddenly do not seem strange or new at all. Elias’ insights, drawn from the simplicity and the complexities of his personal odyssey, become my insights in the context of my own life. It is as if I have intuitively understood them all along but just needed someone like Elias to speak the obvious clearly to me.Turning the pages of Tears of an Innocent God was for me a little like touching the hem of Jesus’ garment. I felt something holy and healing flow into me. If you are yearning for a balm to soothe a wounded soul, you will find it in these pages. If you are searching for meaning in those confounding and inexplicable events in life, you will find it here, too. And so also will you find a sense of your own innate nobility as well as the means to benevolence, forgiveness, and self-acceptance, if that’s what’s missing in your life. It’s all here. The Foreword to this book, written by a lifelong friend of Elias, is a treasure in itself. It captures and hands to us in eloquent prose some sparkles and reflections from the finely cut facets of Elias’ remarkable life. It introduces us to the man and invites us into his immense abode of kindness, grace, and wisdom. Having read the Foreword, I, too, felt like a lifelong friend of Elias. More than a friend, a brother!I am now doing something I have never done before with any book other than the Bible. I am ordering a copy of Tears of an Innocent God for each of my seven grown children to share with their families and friends. I wish them all to find, as I did in the pages of this book, the joy, the surprise, and the assurance of God’s compassionate presence in everyday life. And I have a feeling that this book is also going to be the perfect Christmas present to send to many of my friends.I close by encouraging you to not read Tears of an Innocent God but, rather, to savor and slowly assimilate it, portion by portion. It has layers of meaning that cannot be grabbed, only absorbed. It’s that kind of book.

I predict this book will become a contemplative classic By Carl McColman Here's a book that weaves together stories, dream sequences, thoughtful reflection, and spiritual practices to form a brilliant exercise in contemplative insight. Elias Marechal, a Trappist monk with a strong appreciation for the wisdom of the world's great contemplative traditions, pulls from an almost dizzying array of sources: stories from his own life, Jewish folklore, the wisdom of the mystics, interfaith dialogue, tales from monasteries (his own and others) and keen insight into the many-faceted nature of human suffering, particularly concerning racism, anti-Semitism, and the violence of war. The result is a refreshingly honest book of spiritual counsel, that never floats off into pious platitudes but remains grounded both in authentic life experience and in the liberating wisdom of Jesus, whom Marechal describes as a voice for “radical equality and inclusivity.” Although each of the five “conversations” in the book culminates with instructions for a prayer or contemplative practice, this is not just another spiritual self-help book. If anything, this is a book that will challenge you, wherever you are, to take your hunger for God to a deeper, truer, more real place. This book is lyrically written, intelligent yet embodied, accessible yet challenging. I’ve never made this bold of a prediction for any other contemporary book, but I’ll say it now: I think this is a book that contemplatives will still be reading centuries from now. It’s that good.

Elias MarechalI was honored to recieve a signed copy of this book from Br. Elias and will read it more than once. Below or some thoughts on the book. Each human being has a unique relationship with God. At the same time because of our shared humanity there is a commonality that allows us to speak of our experiences that may be a help to others. In fact our experiences and thoughts about our lives, struggles and relationship with God can also bring healing for those who listen and read. For the Holy Spirit speaks through us all, all we need do is to learn to listen and ponder in silence. The human heart as it grows and becomes more deeply human, less fearful and more compassionate, is in reality taking on the ‘Heart of Christ’. In this wonderful book Br. Elias is truly giving us a glimpse into his heart that is enveloped by the love of God. Elias is a humble man, who knows of his own need for continue healing, he is a true wounded healer, something we are all called to be.There are stories that Br. Elias shares that are touching, even heart breaking that can give some insight into the mystery of Infinite Love. He understands that for God to love us completely there has to be a ‘seeing’ that is total, for to know all is to understand all.In the Chapter titled “The Radiant Christ”, we get an insight into how Jesus saw others: “Christ’s gaze pierces the insides of the Romans, each one squatting over broken glass-the wreckage of their inner lives. Many have collapsed into spiritual oblivion and emotional stupor. By day, their mouths squeeze into thin lines; by night, they are captive to fitful dreams filled with hanging sentences, broken phrases and soundless screams.”“Christ knows all this, which is why—right in the middle of his passion—he stands absolutely still and asks his Father to forgive the unaware for they do not know what they are doing”.The above quote speaks to me, for I see myself in the ‘Romans’. For I at times feel as if I am alienated not only from myself and others, but from God as well. Once we understand that all is seen, we learn that there is no need to try hide from God, or from ourselves, from what lies within our souls. For God is the true eternal foundation that we can stand from, love unchanging, grace filled, bringing all of our inner struggles and fragmentation to a place that is healing. While having a deep faith in Christ Jesus and grounded in his faith, Br. Elias also has a deep insight in how the Holy Spirit works in others faith paths. In the Chapter titled “When God’s Ways Seem Irrational”, he relates a story about how an old man, a Buddhist monk from Tibet dealt with being imprisoned by the communist. His name was Patrul. For the first week he was kept in a cell (a box) constructed in such a way that he could not fully stand, nor stretch out, a true torture, a level of cruelty that only we humans could think up. After a week, a guard dragged him semi-conscious into a windowless cell. For fifteen years this old man suffered unspeakable torture and deprivation. When he was released he was able to travel to the large Tibetan settlement in India. What touched me deeply is what this monk told the Dali Lama after he gently asked him this question: “Tell me, Patrul, was there ever a time when you felt in serious danger?” His answer: “Only when I sensed the possibility of losing the compassion I felt toward my captors—one in particular. The loss of compassion would have split my heart in two”When the Dali Lama asks him if he hates the Chinese, his response is always the same: “Why would I want to drag more hatred into the world”? The love that this man has and the compassion truly point to the work of the “Living Flame of Love” that St. John of the Cross talks about. Did not this monk see, in the way that Christ saw those, who brought about his own death in such a cruel and unjust manner? There is so much richness in this book that it needs to be read slowly and perhaps more than once. In a world that often places our inner growth towards Infinite Love to an unimportant place, this book can enliven people from any tradition to begin the journey toward a love that we can only dive into, experience, but never truly understand. That is the joy of the Eternal Journey. God cannot be owned, captured, fit into some narrow theology or ideology. For in that beautiful soul, the old Tibetan monk, will not a Christian see the Heart of Christ at work?I have only scratched the surface of this book, but I highly recommend it to everyone, no matter their faith path. Each human being has a unique relationship with God.
