About the Author Thomas Chalmers (1780–1847) was born in Anstruther, Scotland. He taught science and mathematics and also was a preacher. He began his larger ministry in 1815, at the Tron Church in Glasgow, where he became very popular. In 1823, he became a Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews. From 1828 to 1843, he was a Professor of theology at The University at Edinburgh. As a leader in the Disruption of 1843, he became Professor of Theology to the seceding body, among other activities.

But to come to the understanding that THIS IS how it works will correct wrong thinking and wrong methods of wrestling with your own flesh to make it do what it was created to do. We do not "get rid of" wrong attitudes and old hurts. They are squeezed out in God's holy waste removal process that is most beautifully exposed in this fine old work from Chalmers, perhaps the best thing God ever spoke through him. God captures our minds and hearts and His own Spirit dwelling inside us creates a force that, like centripetal force, expels the old loves and desires and purposes of your life.I cannot recommend this work highly enough.

Tim Keller recommends it in his book Gospel For Life, but the English is surely different than books written today. Chalmers seems to write almost like a doctoral-level psychologist with rather academic language, and I'm finding it hard to wade through.In terms of content and it's beautiful stuff and the concept is absolutely true, I believe. It can even be seen in children: How do you take away one dangerous thing which they've become attached to? Offer them something else that will fascinate them for the moment. In terms of the Christian life, our desires and our affections must be brought into submission under the Lordship of Christ and our affection for Christ must become supreme to conquer all other unwanted districting attachments that would interfere with worship of Christ.

I'm not sure I've read a more thought provoking soul stirring diagnosis of the human heart than what is contained in this work. Where your treasure is there your heart will be also.

Excellent Christian rites of passage By Amazon Customer One of my worries in regards to being a widowed mom is am I going to be able to pass on my husband and I’s faith single-handily. When Pass It On came up for review especially with the secondary title of “building a legacy of faith for your children through practical and memorable experiences”, I knew it was a book that I needed to read. I’ve always thought, even though we aren’t Jewish, that rites of passage for children are something that Christians should do – to recognize who their children are as they grow in their faith. Mr. Burns and Lee give parents the tools they need to be able to bless their children at whatever stage they are at and make it meaningful – even if the child rolls their eyes or deny wanting anything to do with a ceremony. My only issue with the book was the use of grade levels to determine where a child is at – as a home school family – my children don’t fit into the typical grades like if they were in school so one may be above, another below or another in between. The good thing is this book is flexible and if your ‘kindergarten’ aged child is more mature and seems to fit in the ‘first grade’ then use that.So each grade has a different spiritual aspect attached to it, so second grade is “an invitation to the Bible”, the authors walk through what is going on in this child’s life and how it affects their faith, then they describe what a rite of passage could look like for that child (these passages don’t have to be huge to-do’s just gather the immediate family) and some ideas for gifts ranging from the cheap to the more expensive as well as Scripture. The authors then list what the average second grade child is like physically, emotionally, relational and spiritually – this will help parents better gauge where their child fits especially if the family doesn’t assign grade levels. I know it comes in handy for myself such as my 9 year old son who isn’t reading yet (not for lack of trying though) but is working at a fourth grade level in all other subjects.Overall, I think this is a fantastic book and I know my oldest who is 13 will more than likely find it cheesy but I’d love to try to fit these into our lives especially as I try to strive to make our faith more strong and real in light of our new lives. The rites of passage aren’t bound in stone and each family can tweak as they need to for their family or for their child – but the authors do say if you do it for this child and the other children see it be prepared to do it for the next child and so on. I often find it hard to have one on one time with the children as we’re so busy and I’m only one person but the other positive about a rite of passage is letting the child know they are loved and cherished by both the Lord and myself even if the one on one attention is lacking. I will be referring back to this in the coming months and try to figure out how to implement this in our lives.**I was provided a copy of this book from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Extraordinary Book With Creative Approach By streetbook This is an extraordinary book and just what I was looking for. It takes a very unique and memorable approach to passing down a legacy of Christian Faith to your children. The authors use a developmental approach to this by suggesting an annual rites of passage to teach biblical principals in an impactful manner. Starting at Kindergarten age up through Senior year in high school there are suggestions for a yearly intentional celebration using symbols, experiences and community that helps enhance your children's faith. The authors made a point that hit home with me on how we put way more time in helping our children develop academically than in how they develop spiritually. Some of the lessons emphasized include generosity, responsibility, invitation to the Bible, rhythm or how to manage time in a manner that results in a healthy rhythm for your child's life, friendship and many other pertinent areas. The suggestions are creative and should result in quality family experiences that are meaningful to both the parent(s) and child long after it is over. Because this book is so unique it is a little hard to describe but if you want to teach your child Christian Principals in a symbolic manner that leaves a legacy that carries on in adult hood (that has a creative and fun approach) then this is the book for you.

By Andrew Smith In Pass It On, Jim Burns and Jeremy Lee explored the principles on how to parent during each stage of your children’s development. The authors both believe that our faith in Jesus can leave a lasting legacy for our children. The Bible even declared how the effects of previous generations could have on the current generation. They shared a story about the famous speaker Jonathan Edwards and how each generation make a lasting positive impact. They also revealed the story of Max Jukes and how his family line included a number of rapists, murderers, and prostitutes. The book contains thirteen chapters and they cover each grade level in order to assist your child in their rite of passage.One of my favorite chapters was entitled, “Seventh Grade: The Blessing”. This chapter discussed the importance of celebrating your child entering adulthood. The authors encouraged parents to have a blessing ceremony for their child. They could give them a written blessing, a family dinner, or a public blessing. They also strongly suggested not to focus on achievement as being the center of the blessing, instead parents should focus on their faith, choices, future, and much more. They also included scripture verses of where passages discuss blessings. I believe this chapter has the potential to greatly impact and bless your child’s life, if you’re a parent, I encourage you to try this!I would recommend this life changing book to any parent on any stage of parenting. This book is meant to be read year to year in order to assist parents in raising their children and instilling principles in their life that will benefit generation after generation. I love how the authors both appeared to be very knowledgably in parenting and teaching children about the importance of faith in Christ. I loved how the book was laid out and how they included different resources for each chapter such as samples scripts and questions. I also liked how they enclosed a special section on “What You Need to Know about _____ graders”. I thought it was really helpful seeing what changes physically, emotionally, relationality, and spiritually affect our children at each different stage of their life.“I received a review copy of Pass It On from Litfuse for this review.”

NaLee the beginning of a trilogy. The story begins in Chicago, Frances is at his parents funeral. He is worried about where he is going to live, his sister is newly married with a baby on the way, and Frances doesn't want to interfere with that. He knows that she is his best bet though. As he is leaving the cemetery his estranged grandmother pulls up in a limo and informs him that he is to live with her. She take him to her private island in the middle of the Atlantic off the Florida coast and the adventures begin there. There he meets NaLee the mermaid, in a secluded lagoon on the island. Frances, a handsome boy, lives after the death of his parents with his grandmother on a private island. There he meets Nalee, a real mermaid. Both have to exist alongside the adventures of their first love and both have to experience things of which they had never dared to dream of.Erin Sankey's captivating writing style makes it easy for the reader to come into a completely different world. Enjoy yourself! A great book!

Very refreshing By Angie First off, I consider myself a bad ass warrior woman, and so I've always resented that most of the fantasy genre I've been through usually portrayed females as 1) helpless/needing to be saved, 2) a mishmash of lame stereotypes and generalizations (see R Jordan's horrible take on women throughout WoT, blaaah), or 3) just plain absent altogether, where instead we have an undersized yet brave protagonist who assumes many 'feminine' or weak qualities but ultimately uses his courage and pureness of heart to save the day (yea!!!) after his company of male traveling companions gets him to wherever he needs to go so he can snuff out the evil.Anyway, this is NOT that type of fantasy. Ulla is my favorite because she reminds me of myself! She is a strong, independent woman with a sharp wit and blade, and she can handle herself in combat with anybody! She puts Will (main character) in his place when she needs to and exudes a lot honor. Will is an interesting lead because he remains morally ambiguous throughout the novel and gives us something to chew on. He makes bad decisions and some good ones, but he'll keep you guessing.Overall this is a refreshing take on the genre, and is a quick and entertaining read but still has plenty of depth without being a 10 book series where each novel is 700+ pages long. The fight scenes are incredibly well written and the author has clearly done research or has experience with medieval weaponry (he's holding a huge broadsword in the pic on the back). This isn't your standard fare combat, and here we have battles written in step-by-step detail that let's the reader vividly fight each of Will's battles with him. Check this out if you want well written fantasy that isn't afraid to completely bypass the redundant themes presented in most fantasy novels.

Perfect blend of fantasy and historical fiction with interesting characters and interwoven plot lines. There were a lot of action sequences and an intriguing story that painted a vivid picture in my head and kept me wanting to read more. I never knew what to expect next.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a unique and easy to read fantasy/action story.

134 of 135 people found the following review helpful. Diminutive but useful. By Just A Mom Things you'll want to know...1) This book is quite small. It's designed to fit in a pocket so you can pray anywhere. See pic- the book is smaller than my hand.2) What's inside: a few introductory pages with quotes. Then largely prayer request pages (with dates, and a check-off box for "answered") paired with plain-lined "answers/journaling" pages.There is one page each for the days of the week, so you can organize prayers by Monday topics, Tuesday topics, etc.There are four pages scattered throughout the request pages explaining the classic ACTS prayer concept.At the end, there are a few more prayer ideas. The book concludes with an explanation of salvation.3) In the rear of the book, there is a pocket. Great place to stick prayer request slips of paper, but definitely too small for a church bulletin. Picture it as the size of a traditional funeral program.4) There's an elastic band to hold it closed. Weirdly, it's black. I have no idea why they didn't color coordinate it with the journal.5) There's a ribbon to keep your place (which is brown). Probably just like the one in your Bible, glued or sewn into the spine.6) The title you see on the front is a paper wrapper that comes off. Underneath is a monochromatic brown journal with a border beveled in and the "crosshairs" symbol from the movie The War Room.Other impressions...It's classic looking and sturdy. I think it will survive pockets and purses.You'll need to write small! There are seven horizontal lines for journaling per inch. If you need reading glasses, this might not be the journal for you. I also wish there were a place for a small pen or pencil, so you could keep them together.It's a good journal. It probably meets the needs of the purchaser who is looking for a place to keep prayer requests.However... if you saw the movie, how the lead character was journaling long prayers and copying Bible verses, this book is not for that purpose.If you're looking for instruction on that kind of battle strategy prayer, I'd recommend a different resource. Priscilla Shirer's Fervent book (also from the movie) is excellent. Paring it with a regular journal notebook, in regular size with just lined paper, would work.I give it four stars because it won't be the answer for every believer, but it is a good "little" journal.

In the movie when she gave one to her daughter it looked like a regular size book at least 4X6 or 5X7 - this is mini and I do not see how anyone can write in it!

The battle plan prayer journal, By Carol Very disappointed when I got my package , I thought the journal was bigger , the pics makes it look bigger than it is . For 10.86 I would have rather not bought it for that price could have got something else . I would return it if it was bought at a store , but I am not paying shipping to send back .So I will not buy again

Flawed but thought provoking By Robert Simpson This book is based on the premise that the Duke of Clarence survived to become king in the early 20th century, and hence there is a totally different royal family. Good idea, but unfortunately the resulting family is little different from the true one in terms of style and actions. Despite that the plot is good and tight, although the crucial point pulling everything together is given as a rather cryptic side note on the family tree. Overall a fun read, with a little bit of thinking needed to make it all out.
