When dead presidents in a supernatural world play the board game of world conquest, their moves are carried out in the human world. Leaders are born and dictators rise to power as presidents past such as Teddy Roosevelt, Abe Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower, and others, plot their moves. One of them makes a move, and an invasion takes place on Earth. In the supernatural world, it’s about strategy, wits, and the will to win. On Earth, however, it’s an action and adventure story featuring a psychopathic dictator threatening the United States, and the boy who will grow up to stop him from taking over the world. It might seem impossible, but history is being determined before it actually happens. In the end, it’s all about leadership, and little Pauli Campo emerges from his meager existence to lead his country in the fight to avert a world war that could lead to the deaths of millions of people. This is the unGame, and the struggle for world domination continues with each roll of the dice in Presidential Risk.

A very awesome book cover By Tony Parsons What is Operation GANGLAND?Who is the Black Ghost? Will President Pauli be able to solve the US/World problems? This sums the book up “governmental catastrophe.”Some of the names the writer/author came up with would sure fit out bureaucrats today.I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written political satire book. Once again it wasn’t very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another political satire great movie, or mini TV series. It was OK for me & finally pulled together at the end, so I will rate it at 4/5 stars.Thank you for the free Goodreads; Smashwords; Author; PDF bookTony Parsons MSW (Washburn)

What a delightfully original, action packed romp By Emily Weil What a delightfully original romp, featuring three of the most instantly likeable nare-do-wells to come along in a while. Isa Schmidt is the reluctant daughter of the boss the man who runs all the criminal activity in Atlanta and the leader of the group, Puo is a safecracking genius and the pilot of the Seagull/Pelican and Winn is Isa's maybe lover and the rookie on the team a surgeon who was sued for malpractice. It's the setting eighty years after the mega quake that left thousands of major cities and even whole states underwater that creates the basis for the underwater recovery of priceless jewelry and art. The fact that this activity is also highly illegal is what makes this story so original. I am so looking forward to joining the crew of the Pelican for more action packed fun.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great story! Too short. :( By D. Hillis I received this short story through Goodreads' Giveaways, and I'm surprised its not one sponsored by Amazon or some big publishing company. This is a great read, and I was left craving a whole lot more of it.The story telling is great. The sci-fi tech is great. The setting/world building is great. This even had a great editor (or a careful author) because I didn't see any grammar or spelling mistakes common to the smaller giveaways one finds on Goodreads. The story centers around a group of three thieves in this future world setting with their future tech to aid their crimes. The characters each have their distinctive character traits (the smart female leader, the intelligent capable male partner, and the new guy with undiscovered skills). I felt immediately at home in this world, which says a lot for Mr. Ballard's ability. In summary, I have nothing negative to say about this short and eagerly look forward to reading more.

By Kindle Customer Fast paced and well written tale with a logical plot and great characters to build on. Will look forward to more work by Jeffrey A. Ballard. The dialogue moves the plot.

Review "Now, this is an interesting shift from the original, and Guscott must be lauded for not playing the same hand twice. In many ways, this sequel is best served if adapted to animation. Is Guscott listening? There is enough food for thought for readers (and maybe viewers, someday), of every age group.- Dr. Glenville Ashby, International Journalist (The Gleaner) The passion, solidarity, and allegiances displayed by the members of the "Acres of Diamonds" party is evident throughout "Mystical Speed: The Revenge of the Yellow Yams." The message, and life lessons, they share is crystal clear. Change comes only when people work together. Sometimes it's one step at a time, one day at a time, one revolution at a time. Pay attention to those with whom you surround yourself, as not everyone wants the best for you. Yet, with a few Real friends and determination, change will come.-Frannie Cohen.A most enjoyable read, and I can see this book together with its predecessor "Mystical Speed" as a movie along the lines of "Cool Runnings". Great going, Mr Guscott sir. Claudette Beckford Brady,- Author.Lots of laughs- Roy T. Anderson, Filmmaker and movie stuntman.Perfect book when you need cheering up. The Revenge of theYellow Yams is full of life, and keeps you anticipating what is next." - Winnifred Guerrero, NYC public school teacher. This is a well written and very funny book. By blinky Mystical Speed: The Revenge of the Yellow Yams kept me on the edge of my seat with the turning of every page.I could not stop laughing my head off with the talking of animals (like donkey and the annoying john crow) and talking food (like the calm cool Rasta-Yam, the militant Pupalick-Yam, the sensitive Washbelly -Yam and the feisty little yellow yam) who all kept me locked into the story.Brother Tukuma, Mr. Samfy, Big Boy and the sycamore tree were wonderful additions to the story which made it authentic, funny and very rich in folklore. It was also sobering in reference to the social and economic changes that can be achieved if people work together for the love of country and region.Author Hubert Guscott, is a story teller with an edge of reality in writing that give a bit of history of the Caribbean in addition to his beloved Jamaica. This is a story that will inspire you, make you laugh as well as explore the serious side of issues in the region. It shows how family, good friends, faith, and love will always prevail.

Yet, with a few Real friends and determination, change will come.Guscott writes from his heart in "Mystical Speed: The Revenge of the Yellow Yams." His second work is a lesson of love - love of country, love of mentors, love of friends and most of all, love of family.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mystical Indeed. By Semone Esdaile While reading Mystical Speed: The Revenge of The Yellow Yams I felt like I was actually inside the book. The book is so well written that it was hard not to "feel" the characters coming alive. I can tell that Mr. Guscott wrote the with enthusiasm and passion and it really transferred to the pages of the book. Once I started to read the book I couldn't put it down. At one point I wanted to cheat and read ahead to see what the characters were up to. Little yellow one of the characters, is a force to reckon with. Her name might be little yellow but don't let the name fool you.Even if you did not read book one (which I did) you could still read book two and you would not be lost.I recommend you buy at least two books. One for your coffee table and one as a gift.YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

How to Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People) is a smart, hip guide for spiritual seekers who want to experience more love and stability in all forms of relationships. Told from the unique vantage points of authors Meggan Watterson and Lodro Rinzler, this book explores staying anchored in the foundation of self-love as you navigate the natural (and often stormy) cycle of a relationship. Their dual perspectives as teachers and scholars of Christian mysticism and Buddhism make for a rich and fascinating dialogue that covers everything from sex, self-worth, falling in (and out of) love, deep friendships, to breakups—and how to maintain an open heart through it all.   At its core, this book is about learning to love yourself no matter what. Meggan and Lodro suggest that you are worthy of love, both self-love and the love of others. They aren’t experts on how to get that man or lady to fall in love with you, nor are they experts on how to have “the perfect relationship.” They are spiritual teachers who know that relationships have a life of their own, and can speak to the human element of what it means to experience them fully. In the process, they share deeply personal, revealing, honest anecdotes and spiritual practices to assist you with the inevitable ebbs and flow of love in all its manifestations.

How to Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People): Spiritual Advice for Modern Relationships, by Lodro Rinzler, Meggan Watterson, Rinzler Lodro

Review “How to Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People) is a modern-day guide to all things relationship— starting with numero uno—yourself. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like more love in their life. And last time I checked that was everyone on the planet.”

— Christiane Northrup, M.D., New York Times best-selling author of Goddesses Never Age

“How to Love Yourself is one of the best books I’ve read on the topic of relationships. This book translates life-changing spiritual principles in a hip and relevant way. Meggan and Lodro offer the most treasured gift; a pathway to learn to love yourself no matter what. I recommend this book to anyone ready to give, receive, and embody love.”

— Gabrielle Bernstein, New York Times best-selling author of Miracles Now

“This is a new kind of self-help book. There is no perfection and pontificating here—just the beautiful, messy, and wonderful truth about love, shared with great generosity. While both authors are deeply steeped in their mutual wisdom traditions, their greatest teachings are in the personal stories they share. No matter what is (or isn’t) happening in your life, Lodro and Meggan help you to see that your whole life is your love life.”

— Susan Piver, New York Times best-selling author of The Wisdom of a Broken Heart and Start Here Now

“How to Love Yourself is an illuminating look at love—a quality hard to figure out even as we are taught that it makes the world go ‘round. The book is wise, useful, and also great fun to read. Lodro, from his long-term Buddhist practice, and Meggan, with her Christian mystic background, offer different ways of viewing love as the force that frees us to truly be ourselves, and be happy.”

— Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness and Real Happiness

“The great thing about Lodro and Meggan writing a book about love is that you get perspectives from both a down-to-earth Buddhist dude, and a hot female mystic—AND!—double the jokes and love stories. The result is a lot of truth and modern wisdom on how to expand your capacity to love—in suffering, in sex, in separation, in spirit, in your very real life that could always be filled with more love.”

— Danielle LaPorte, New York Times best-selling author of The Desire Map and The Fire Starter Sessions

“I so wish I had read this book when I was 18 and just starting out in the dating world. It would have saved me a lot of trouble and a boatload of Kleenex. Meggan and Lodro are not only totally sane in their approach to relationships, they’re also practical and hilarious. This page-turner will most assuredly crack you up, but more importantly, it will ease your path to finding the love of your life, whether that turns out to be someone else or the person staring back at you when you look in the mirror.”

— Kate Northrup, best-selling author of Money, A Love Story

“I am so grateful the universe shifted and brought both Meggan and Lodro together to share this sacred work. Loving yourself is no easy task but it’s the most rewarding lesson. How To Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People) is a manual that helps you dive deep into the cave of your own heart so you can become your own beloved. This step-by-step guide helps you crack open the most auspicious part of you so that you can walk safely in love. If you are ready to courageously leap out of fear and into unconditional love, this is the book for you.”

— Kyle Gray, best-selling author of Angel Prayers

“Meggan Watterson and Lodro Rinzler have written a modern-day spiritual ‘he said, she said’ as they guide us along the path to loving ourselves fiercely, ultimately giving way to loving others and being loved. Intimate, entertaining, provocative, and revealing, How To Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People) is for all seekers of self-love and self-acceptance. Give your heart a gift and immerse yourself in the wisdom and lessons this book has to offer—you just may find love where you least expect it.”

— Nancy Levin, best-selling author of Jump . . . And Your Life Will Appear

“How To Love Yourself (And Sometimes Other People) has real modern gems in it, and the down-to-earth and complementary voices of its authors, Meggan and Lodro—both young experts in their own spiritual fields—leaves you feeling like they are totally present with you as you read these pages. What really helps us to navigate love is a good conversation with trusted friends, friends who don’t judge us, friends who actually know what they are talking about. Meggan and Lodro both show their ability to be those friends, to themselves, to each other, and to us as we read along.”

— Ethan Nichtern, author of The Road Home

“Looking for love? Well, stop. Seriously, the search is over. Meggan and Lodro remind us that love is right here, within. There’s nowhere we need to go or some better version of ourself we need to become. How To Love Yourself is that slap to the forehead that we all can use. This beautiful gem reminds us that we are love and therefore we don’t need to wait for a partner to find love. We can get that party started right now––and then a partner can swing in and join us on this wild adventure of loving ourselves. No stress. No expectations. Just love.”

— Kris Carr, New York Times best-selling author of Crazy Sexy Diet and Crazy Sexy Kitchen

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended if you want to strengthen love By David Mynchenberg Who wouldn't benefit from hearing about how to love themselves? I love this book. Simply put. I'm recently going through a break up and it has comforted my soul. It's like a conversation with each of the authors; one author shares their piece of each chapter's subject, like how to love being single, and then the other author shares their experience and nugget of understanding. The only thing I do not like about it is the chapters relatively short and I'd love to hear more of what these authors think-however I could read their other books if I want more. Both are amazing people who are easy for me, a 29 year old male, to relate with.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. perfect timing By Jessica Creech This is just the spiritual dating advice I needed at just the right time! Both authors translate Buddhism and Christian mysticism into simple practices to enrich your relationship with your highest self so that you might flourish more freely in the world with others. I have been deeply inspired by Watterson's work for years and I love this book concept, style and delivery. When I was finished I had clear action plans for cultivating a better relationship with myself and how to practice healthier boundaries, non-attachment, and better loving kindness with others.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. wonderful By Nathalie Desjacques I highly recommend this book. I read the first chapter on an Italian train, on my way to spend one day in Venice on my own with a broken heart, feeling curious and a bit anxious at the same time about such an experience. I spent one of the most beautiful day of my life... there is magic in this book, good, simple magic that makes you connect to unconditional love.

Great Action and Interesting Characters By Glenn Haggerty Fisherman, Elijah Cummings, runs a volunteer lifesaving station from Eagle Harbor, on the southern shore of stormy Lake Superior. Victoria Donnelly is the daughter of a well-to-do shipping magnet. And although they’ve both had secret feelings for one another since grade school, their different social stratus towers like a wall between them. Moreover, Victoria's parents pressure her into a betrothal with Gilbert Sinclair, another wealthy shipping magnet—and Elijah’s enemies since grade school. When Gilbert loses a ship and blames Elijah, conflict ensues between these two headstrong men. Will Elijah gain a prime piece of city land for a new lifesaving station, or will Gilbert undercut Eliza's efforts in game the land for his own commercial purposes? And who will win Victoria's heart? In Love’s Every Whisper, Naomi Rawlings continues the story of Mac and Tressa Oakton, while shifting the focus to Elijah and Victoria. Once again there is great lifesaving action, pathos, and romance, interesting characters and a deeper glimpse of American life on the Great Lakes in the 1880s. The conflict between Gilbert and Elijah takes an interesting evolution. And the title provides another great life lesson in self-respect/value and the consequences of conflict and the need for reconciliation.

Historical with Heart By eLynda Naomi Rawlings is a new-to-me author, but the description of her second installment in the Eagle Harbor series, Love’s Every Whisper, immediately intrigued me. How does a woman deal with repeated failure and the disappointment of her family? What would an intense need to please drive her to tolerate or even accept as what she deserved? I couldn’t wait to find out the answers and this book exceeded my expectations with a terrific tale of romance and self-discovery.I found this book to be fascinating, largely because of the historical detail. From a description of what must be one of the first blood pressure machines to the workings of the United States Life Saving Service and rescues on Lake Superior by a group of volunteers, I couldn’t put the book down. While I don’t have any real depth of knowledge of this time period or of these topics, Rawlings does an excellent job of balancing description and action so I never felt lost or bored, but I did feel as if I learned something while reading.I loved watching Victoria come to appreciate her own value and strength throughout the novel, and this was one aspect of her spiritual development; I have not considered a lack of self-esteem a spiritual problem before, but reading about her struggles to see her worth in God was exceptionally moving. Elijah’s growth in faith and realizations of how his actions impact those around him was well-done and I found it remarkable that someone so focused on saving the lives of others needed to be reminded that his personal life held sway over others, too.The romance is beautifully done, but nothing comes easily. Of course the hero and heroine face obstacles along the way but they are realistic, especially given the time period in which the story takes place. Their interactions build throughout the novel, leading up to a satisfying and enjoyable conclusion that thrilled me as a fan of romance.Having missed the first book in this series, I have already gone back and purchased it to read more from this author and series. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy historical fiction, romance, or with an interest in maritime history.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for this honest review. All of the opinions expressed are my own.

That being said, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. I personally didn’t read the first book and though it may have filled in a couple small gaps, I didn’t feel lost or find it confusing. I discovered her books a couple years ago with the release of her first book with the Love Inspired Historical line and very much enjoyed it. I was really excited to read this book and can happily say that I enjoyed it immensely!Ms. Rawlings does an excellent job with the details and descriptions. I enjoyed getting to visit the little town on the edge of Lake Superior and see it through her characters’ eyes. It’s obvious she did a great deal of research about the US Life Saving Service and sailing in general. I will admit that there were a couple times I struggled with the amount of detail that occasionally kind of clumped together on a page, but fortunately, it didn’t bog down the story or disrupt my reading very much.Victoria Donnelly is the heroine of this story and I fell in love with her almost immediately. She is very realistic in her flaws, but also in her kind heart. There was a part of me that felt so sorry for her, because in the beginning, she doesn’t see her true worth. I loved the kindness and desire to help others that drives her throughout the story, even when she struggles to know what is right. There is definitely a bold message of worth, value, and strength shown through this character that I wish so many young women would know. Watching Victoria grow and discover how much she is loved was definitely a highlight of this book, for me.Elijah Cummings is an interesting, if sometimes frustrating, hero. He tries so hard to save everyone who ventures into the nearby waters, when his life seems to be falling apart. He is definitely strong and very stubborn, to the point I kind of wanted someone to whack him upside the head. That being said, I did fall in love with him, too. And sometimes I think we need more characters that are flawed and maybe a little broken to remind us that we don’t always have to pretend perfection. Elijah is far from perfect, but he tries to be a better man, which is all anyone can really ask. While his actions aren’t always noble, his intentions and heart are - speaking of, I also loved his heart for Victoria. He’d loved her for years, but always saw the impossibilities in any future between them. Even when it seemed so out of reach, he was still there, guiding her and trying to show her the worth she so rarely saw in herself. My only negative comment is that I really didn’t much care for Gilbert. Elijah’s rival in this book, who I believe is also the main character of the next story. He is something of the villain here and is not a very likeable character. I honestly can’t really see reading his story, though he does become a little more tolerable later in the book. I wish that Ms. Rawlings had softened his character a bit, so that I would have liked him at least a little better. Finally, I would say that I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Christian historical romance!I received an advanced copy of this book from the author for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good for high school to college age Bible students By Jorge G. Medina Book Review: What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About by Kenneth Berding & Matt WilliamsIt is easy to be taken by an attractive, well-constructed hardcover and a fresh inside layout with call-out boxes, full-color photos, etc. and this book has them. The book seems designed for adult Sunday school or even perhaps Bible colleges. One would hope that Pastors and other leaders would seek out a more advanced book. That being said, this book is a decent introduction to the meaning of the New Testament, and the different approach each author takes and the varied motivations that gave birth to the message of the books.I appreciated that they began with a survey of what would have been part of the culture and historical knowledge at the time of Christ. That context is extremely useful when reading the New Testament. Christ and His apostles were not dropped from heaven into a newly created Palestine, but rather were brought up in a land with a lot of history, and Jewish, Greek and Roman customs that help make sense of many stories. It is difficult to divorce one’s doctrinal views from Biblical interpretation and, as other reviewers have pointed out, Calvinism shines through in the book. Coming from a different persuasion and knowing that the New Testament does not dwell in such doctrines (other things are more important to the New Testament writers), I have to deduct a star for it.Finally, the text has a Bible-believing point of view, which is always appreciated in the day and age we live in. There are probably better introductions to the New Testament (e.g. “The Cradle, The Cross, and the Crown), but this one should do for high school to college age youth.3/5Disclosure: The book was received for free from Kregel Academic & Ministry book review program. The program does not require a positive review, only a truthful one.

Very nice intermediate NT survey By Jeff When I had the opportunity to review this book, I took it without deliberating because I reviewed its predecessor, What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About, which I was very impressed with, and find very helpful as a reference tool. The artwork is on the hardcover, which I really like, instead of a dust jacket. The paper and everything else about it is very high quality. Color is used throughout making it pleasing to look at, and the table of contents has a list almost four pages long of maps, photographs, and tables, to give you an idea of how illustrative it is. As with most things “illustrated”, there are many photographs that are fillers–they could probably have been taken anywhere. I may have been more judicious and not have to have photos everywhere just because. On the other hand, it would be hard to find completely relevant photographs to find for every space that an image would occupy. It’s a New Testament introduction (or survey) of sorts, but written by those who teach undergraduates as opposed to those in seminary or graduate courses. The audience is for the less scholarly inclined and more for the regular person who would like to get a good overview of each book of the New Testament, and specifically what each inspired author was conveying to their original audience. There are also “more than one hundred applications highlighted in sidebars to clarify how the New Testament authors might apply their writings to Christians living in the twenty-first century.”I found some of it to be somewhat of a summary of the Biblical book, which is rather simple, but the majority is on what each author emphasizes and is conveying to his audience. The book is generally theologically neutral, but is bent towards the Calvinist end. This may be more apparent in some of the usual areas. The first chapter, Walking in the Sandals of a First-Century Jew, is extremely helpful. This provides a backdrop of where the authors are coming from and who some of their original audience is.There is no introduction to the gospels, which I at first found puzzling. I then realized that the book is focused on each author. However, What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About has a very helpful introduction to the minor prophets. I think one for at least the Synoptic Gospels would have been helpful to show the differences even more than the similarities. There is an introduction to Paul’s writings which is very informative. For those who would like something other than the mammoth New Testament introductions, like deSilva’s–which I have–and is literally the biggest (tallest) book I have, but something more comprehensive than what a study Bible would have in their introductions to each book, this is a good fit. I’m very glad to have it as a reference book.I received this book free from Kregel Academics for the purpose of reviewing it. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Refreshing NT Survey By Dave There are, of course, a countless number of New Testament survey volumes available to the biblical student. But rarely does one come into publication that has a unique approach and format. Such is the case of What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About: A Survey of Their Writings. It is the editorial product of Kenneth Berding and Matt Williams, both holding PhDs and both professors at Biola University, and includes contributions from fifteen separate New Testament scholars. The distinctive approach is that the material focuses on the author first and the information second. In other words the material is background oriented. The very first chapter, “Walking in the Sandals of a First-Century Jew,” sets the pace. We are introduced to what it was like to live in that first-century of Christianity. The singular format is derived from the arrangement of the material. Typically, New Testament surveys arrange the material book-by-book and in the order of Matthew through Revelation. However, What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About arranges the books by author (hence a hint at the title). Thus, information on the book of Acts follows information on the Gospel of Luke and all of John’s writings are grouped together and so on.Each chapter begins with a one-page summary answering the questions who, when, where and why and then launches in to the pertinent material from the point of view of the author. Each chapter ends with “Key Words and Concepts for Review,” emphasizing what the biblical writer cared about.A couple of other observations: First, this is a reference book. Although one could read this volume through cover to cover, it is most beneficial if one is doing study on a particular book or author. Second, this book is a textbook – a refreshing breakthrough in the sometimes monotonous procession of New Testament facts. I would estimate that this would be the textbook of the future for first-year Bible college students. I would encourage Bible college professors who teach New Testament survey to utilize this volume as their primary textbook. The final word is that this volume is excellent and quite beneficial to anyone without a seminary degree. But it would also be a worthwhile reference for anyone with a thirst for biblical knowledge. Regardless of your theological educational level, you will add knowledge and understanding of the New Testament.Disclaimer: I was provided this book by Kregel Publishing for a fair and honest review.

By spook I thought it was really great how the personalities of the characters developed in this book. They all had their differences and issues with one another like any group of people, but with the right leader they united to win their battle.

About the Author Jules Verne was a French writer and pioneer of the science fiction genre through novels like Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in Eighty Days, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, and The Mysterious Island. A visionary, Verne wrote about air, space, and underwater travel long before the ability to travel in these realms was invented, and his works remain amongst the most translated, most continually reprinted, and most widely read books of all time. Jules Verne died in 1905 having paved the way for future science fiction writers and enthusiasts.

How I know this is a sequel is because it has all the same characters as in the two previous books. Here is the series 1. The Moon-Voyage 2. All Around the Moon 3. Topsy-Turvy.

I had not heard of this story but thoroughly enjoyed the sample. I am looking forward to downloading the complete works of Jules Verne so I can read this entire story as well as the many other stories that Jules Verne had written.

North Slope is a barren desert of ice in Alaska that stretches from the Brooks Mountains to the Beaufort Sea, frozen during the winter clear to the North Pole. It is in this wilderness that the Fyffe Oil Company struggles in its search for oil. Andrew Fyffe, owner of the company, finds time and money are running out. On the rig a man has been killed; suspicion and fear are rampant among the drilling crews as they continue their superhuman efforts before Fyffe goes bust. The one man who (Fyffe believes) can save the company is McKinnon, once a famous wildcat oil man, but now a drunk, a drop-out. Fyffe kidnaps McKinnon from a drinking spree and flies him up to the oil rig, Fyffe One. When McKinnon sobers up he quickly sees he will need all his old resourcefulness, skill and courage to save the rig from catastrophe. The violent action of this story takes place against the background, strongly conveyed, of Alaskan Arctic winter and night. The rig and its crew confront dangers from temperatures far below zero, from fire, and from a subtle and complex intrigue ruthlessly executed by men whose objectives do not include the welfare of Fyffe One. This first novel tells a powerful story with conviction, a story to spellbind the reader and a mystery to be solved.

About the Author I was born in Cuckfield, Sussex in 1941 and brought up in London, living in Wandsworth and Battersea. I attended Sir Walter St. John's Grammar School for boys in Battersea until the family moved to Portsmouth in 1954 for my father's health. I continued my education at Southern Grammar School for Boys. I left school and started work as a junior designer at Twilfits (Corset/Brassiere manufacturer). I left after one year and joined the Merchant Navy as a Steward. Two years later I married Pat, my teenage sweetheart (I first laid eyes on her when she was fourteen), and went to work on a building site. Three months later I joined the RAF as an electrician. After 16 years of service I left and worked as an electrical engineer with Ross Foods. After two years I then joined BAC working in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) for a year followed soon afterwards with another food manufacturer (Mars) for further 17 years. I retired in 1996 and moved out to Spain with Pat in 1997 to live on the Costa Blanca. We have four sons, ten grandchildren and one great-grandson.I have written all my adult life but my very first success came in 1980 when Macmillan published my novel, North Slope. My second success was Shadow of the Wolf published by Robert Hale in 1984. My third, Hell's Gate, published in 2007 by Robert Hale followed by The Eagle's Covenant (2007) and The Devil's Trinity in 2008. The Third Secret was published in March 2009. A Covert War came along in March 2010. My latest novel, The Boy From Berlin was published by Hale in December 2012, and has now been taken up by Harlequin who leased the English language paperback rights for North America and Canada. Harlequin have also published The Eagle's Covenant. My next, published novel, Past Imperfect,  is due for release in January 2015 (Robert Hale Ltd.). I have a non-fiction work, A Word in Your Ear (How God changed my retirement plans), which is self published and available on Amazon

A blast from the past By Jack Everett It is not often I pick up a book and within a few pages get as comfortable as wearing my best house shoes but this book did it for me. Michael Parker's writing reminds me of one of the great escapist mystery adventure writers of the last century: Desmond Bagley. Who else could turn a hopeless drunk into a hero-the last time I saw it was when John Wayne did it for Dean Martin. In the opening sequence our hero is forcibly extracted from a comfortable bar where he has been burying his miseries and taken to meet a former boss whom he hates. It took no large imaginings on my part to figure that these men with history would begin working together once more. It did take a cartload of imagining however to picture where the work was situated on one of the most despicably, hateful environments on earth: North Alaska where if you venture outside for more than a second your eyeballs freeze in their sockets.I could go on at length but suffice is to say that this is a murder mystery that Alistair Mclean would have been proud of and one that P D James could not have written. Read this book and see for yourself.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Editor wanted By Jersey Exile Michael Parker has written a compelling book about oil exploration on the North Slope of Alaska. Unfortunately, he also grafted into this setting a murder mystery. More unfortunate is his lack of an attentive editor.I've been on oil rigs in Wyoming during the winter. It's cold and dangerous. Multiply that cold and danger exponentially, and it must surely be as Parker has described in North Slope. The scenes at the drilling camp, on the rig, traversing the Arctic range by bulldozer and dogsled are vivid and well structured. If this book had simply been about the struggles and terrors of drilling for oil in Alaska, the book would be worth four-to-five stars. His descriptions are that good. But the murder mystery is not. In a way, it's like an Agatha Christie whodunit, with a circumscribed set of suspects within a confined location - not a locked room, but a landlocked (but for a helicopter) setting. I don't find Christie's mysteries interesting, and I didn't find this mystery interesting either. But the biggest problem with this book is the want of an editor. Coffee is always "piping hot." Words are missing as in the sentence, "McKinnon looked at him for seemed like an eternity." I'm pretty sure he's missing the word "what". The word "but" appears as "hut". I have no idea what this means: "The silhouette in the front left-hand oat moved..." Sometimes the word "river," associated with a specific river, is capitalized, and sometimes not. Words are strangely capitalized, such as "company" and "law" though without any context that would suggest capitalization would be proper. The pronoun "I" often appears as the number "1". Comparing two oilmen, Parker writes that "He didn't know which of them had been the best,.." A comparison of two should result in one being "better," not "best". Plots are too frequently described as "evil". In an unnecessary sex scene, the protagonist's lover "put both her hands around the hack of his head." Perhaps that should have been "back of his head," unless "hack" is a part of the cranial anatomy of which I'm unfamiliar. The beauty of an e-book is that it can be edited and republished. I'd suggest Parker find the time to do that.

Nicholson-morton Apparently, the author wrote this book while working in Saudi Arabia. Set in the claustrophobic oil drilling station in the barren ice desert of Alaska, it's a far cry from the hot sands of Saudi! In fact, even though almost 30 years after its original hardback publication, this book makes for a riveting read.Michael Parker effortlessly inhabits the territory of Hammond Innes with his masterful description of a harsh environment and tough characters. The fact that there's a murderer in the midst of the crew on the drilling operation, which itself is a race against a deadline, keeps the pages turning.Recommended.

As Roy visits his past life, you are riveted to find out how he will interact with his ex wife, himself and the serial killer who took away his loved one and yet played a role in making Roy a small, but short lived fortune. Most of us would love the opportunity to go back in time and revisit our past. Jon Spoelstra awakens those thoughts as he presents this exciting thriller.
