In Your Elements: A Blooming Ayurvedic Guide to Creating Your Best Life, by Monica Bloom

About the Author I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on beer, cheese, fried things and Green Bay Packer football games on Sundays. I currently work a job-job with a 2.5 hour daily commute in tech-crazy San Francisco. I come home to an endearing husband, a spritely toddler, two dogs and a cat. I practice daily meditation, exercise regularly, and have been actively sharing Ayurvedic wisdom through my blog, heymonicab.com, since 2008. I have become an expert at tucking Ayurveda neatly into modern life. I'm just like you. If I can incorporate Ayurveda into my wonky-busy schedule, you can, too.

I got interested in Ayurveda a little over a year ago. I asked a yoga teacher for book recommendations and picked up several right away. The books contained a lot of information, but I quickly found myself bogged down by notes I couldn't fully understand. It left me unsure what changes I could make right now, and how to make them.I found Monica Bloom's webpage last winter. I loved how bright and fun she made everything. Her tips were real-life and helpful, and applicable to our western lifestyles. Then came this book, bringing so much wisdom and lightness to a system I knew was right for me but I couldn't implement on my own. Every paragraph holds vital tidbits, quotable quotes, and helpful tips. I read each chapter twice to ensure I didn't miss anything. This is a book that teaches you how to love, care for, and appreciate your self. There is information about how to set up routines, how to exercise, how to eat, how to calm the mind and much more. Anyone can take one of the dozens of dosha quizzes online. But more importantly, the quizzes in this book distinguish between your prakruti and vikruti. I never knew quite how to answer some questions-from my perspective of where my health currently is, or where I knew it should be. Monica helped me to figure that out. There is an entire section on how to manage coffee for your constitution, even! Definitely something I made use of. Her recipes are also excellent, adding a splash of something extra to the traditional versions.I use this book every day. I look things up, I use the recipes, I use it as a guide as I continue to deepen my studies. I sometimes just like to flip through the brightly colored pages with awesome, affirming quotes. I feel like I need a second copy so I can have one to keep beautiful and one to mark up and tear pages out of to hang up around the house.Monica Bloom's book is an awesome resource, especially for us Western folks who don't have a basis in the tradition. It will help you get a grasp on the system of Ayurveda and how it can work for you. Nothing is better than an individualized plan for how to maximize your body and mind health. I truly love it and am so grateful that it is part of my life now! Ayurveda works if you know how to use it. Monica has been a fabulous resource and her wisdom shines through in this book. You should definitely pick this up! Don't wait for the 1st of the month, or a Monday to start making life changes. You can start right now with the exercises and information in this book.

The author, Monica Bloom, has extensive education in Ayurveda, and her voice conveys not only authority on her subject-matter, but also care for her reader and a good sense of humor. I highly recommend In Your Elements to anyone seeking knowledge about Ayurveda, an ancient sister-science to yoga which focuses on the diet and life-management aspects of a healthy body and mind. You'll learn a ton, but it's easy to lose track of time enjoying this book. This beautifully-illustrated guide offers a comprehensive introduction to Ayurveda, an in-depth test that reveals your dosha balance, informative chapters about a variety of Ayurvedic concepts, quick tips and ideas, questions that encourage self-reflection, recipes, and more. The key to adding Ayurveda to your life, Ms. Bloom explains, is to start right where you are. Change comes from the inside out when you're ready for it. When you are, In Your Elements provides inspiration and information to help you bloom into your best self.

An Ayurvedic Book for Everyone By Amazon Customer I have read quite a few books about Ayurveda, and I can honestly say that I believe Monica Bloom's book is a game changer. "In Your Elements" takes what can be a very complex and esoteric subject and makes it easily understandable and immediately applicable. It is presented in such an approachable manner that I felt like I was being coached by my best friend and encouraged to begin to incorporate Ayurveda in a way that made the most sense for my busy life. This book is beautifully designed, which adds to its readability and approachability. It is bright, colorful, and full of features that help you consider each aspect of Ayurveda as you learn it. If you are looking for an exciting entry point into the study of Ayurveda, this book is definitely for you. If you are an advanced student or practitioner, this book must also be in your library. It truly is a book that has something to offer for everyone.

While Thomas has too many rough edges and a nasty mean streak to be lovable, I do love his in-your-face attitude whenever he is interacting with the bad guys. These novels are very fast moving and full of action. Kudos to author Scott Jones for getting the military and martial arts details exactly right. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

By Amazon Customer If you have read this book, it's most likely because you've read James McEwan's first work, Hammer's War: forging the Hammer, otherwise you could be totally lost in this story. If you were one of the smart ones to look past the flaws of the first book, and enjoy the story, you'll definitely want to pick this one up.Dimension Shift picks up right where the first book left off, and uses the same entertaining and fun writing styles of James McEwan. One thing that is different, is much of the grammar and other problems of the first book have been cleaned up, along with the language. Sure, it has its flaws, but with so much fun in a story, I can over look a few flaws.Dimensional Shift is just plain fun. Pick up the book, enjoy a good story, a great hero, and the introduction of new characters that can only bring another entertaining chapter to Hammer's war.PS. This one is much cleaner than the first.

I can only say good things about the book, and am waiting patiently for the next installment. Anyone who's ever played Starguard will greatly enjoy the series.

Seriously, I lost 2 days of full sleep because I couldn't stop reading and turn out the light. I think one time I was rescued by a battery dying (reading on my Kindle app), and the second I finished it. Fun book to read.

Well by the end of it, he'll notice that those things are so bad compared to worrying about his life.Apparently there is 3 millions dollars hidden. The location is a mystery and the ex con didn't take well to that, So Bill and Sarah need a plan to stay alive and figure out just what is going on.Overall it was a decent book. It had its ups and downs for me. I liked the idea and details. But there were just parts where I would lose the interest and have to get back to the book later.

By Glenda This book is listed as young adult, but because of the topic of Alzheimer's, I want to highly recommend it for both teens as well as adults. The angst caused by those family members who are affected by this disease is heartbreaking to consider. You love the individuals with the disease, but there are still feelings of guilt that come when family members suddenly become caretakers well beyond taking care of somebody physically ill.It wasn't surprising then, when, after just losing his father, Bill Taylor was forced to relocate with his mother to take care of her husband's father, who had developed Alzheimer. Because his mother was now the only breadwinner, she had to work, which left Bill having to care for his grandfather all of the time when his mother left. Now he was in school, but really couldn't get involved due to this personal responsibility at home. Later, he would admit to himself that he'd been so angry that he hadn't really tried to make any friends or try to enjoy his new school activities...But an eighth-grade student and neighbor had looked up to him, which was alright; but Bill knew hanging around with a young kid wouldn't help getting friends. It did help, though, when his Mom later called the police about the man who had accosted her son on the road, and the officer they sent happened to be his young friend's father...Finally, Bill did notice a girl in his class--only problem is that she was dating one of the main football players. Still, they connected when she asked him to help her with one of their classes... Interestingly, when she came over to study at his home and met his grandfather, she shared that there was someone in her own family with the same disease. Her being quite comfortable around Bill's grandfather helped greatly in sharing and beginning a relationship.Of course, not to the liking of her boyfriend...Gramps had gotten worse when his son died. When Bill and his mother visited him at a local care residence, they were both upset with the conditions in which he was living. Immediately, she decided to relocate and move in and care for Gramps at home. Now she was working as much as she could because the pay scale for nurses in this country area was well below what she'd been making. Bill, of course, had been given no option. He would need to watch and care for Gramps, ensuring that he didn't wander away and get hurt...Normally, Gramps was no problem. He had a habit of sitting at the table with coins which he counted and separated in stacks, over and over... it was this habit that Bill noticed the most when the investigation got going...when the man who had accosted Bill was murdered... and they learned that he had been a part of the men who had performed a 1992 Brink's Robbery heist!Remember for a brief time Nancy Drew hooked up with The Hardy Boys? Well, I was reminded of those fun mysteries when Bill, who finally wins over to have Sarah as his girlfriend, start an investigation on their own...mostly led by Sarah!Sarah comes from a rich family with a lawyer for her father. But thankfully she has not become spoiled and enjoys the time with Bill and Gramps in their small log cabin. But when she gets interested in solving the case, she certainly takes the lead! And succeeds in getting them into some serious trouble! But with her by Bill's side, he becomes braver and starts using some of the fighting skills he'd been taught by his father...Even when he's fairly certain that Gramps was involved with the heist in some way...Even when he meets up with the Mafia...In many ways, readers will recognize this book as the cozy murder mystery style. We get to know the characters, especially, the three main teen characters, and become invested in their lives. And yet, there is Bill's mother and grandfather who are facing totally changed adult lives that they would never have wanted or planned for. The family commitment and loyalty comes across strong, even while Billy stews about the changes to his life--at least until he meets Sarah!Even the Mafia characters had recognized that Gramps would be no help to them in tracking the money...but Bill and Sarah succeeded where all others had failed in communicating with Gramps! A triumphant story showing some things are possible when you work harder to find the solutions! I loved it. The story moves at a great pace and has character development that brings them to life in a way almost anyone can identify with. The story is an enjoyable mystery following the experience of young Bill as he develops relationships with friends and family as well as uncovers a long-held family secret.I am giving this four stars rather than five because there are some grammatical errors throughout, but nothing that impacts the story in such a way that it is distracting. I strongly recommend this book!

By Bianca Fly-Host of The Beautiful Butterfly Show This was Definitely a different genre for me to read. I have never read a Science Fiction before, but i must say Author Brian Thompson definitely surprised me, and made it worth my reading time. First of all I love the fact that Brian takes the time to list the characters from the beginning. Sometimes in reading a book with so many characters we get lost on who is connected to whom, so this was an Extra Bonus feature that I enjoyed. King was truly an interesting character, he was out for BLOOD...in any way he could get it, he felt Jason almost cost him his life, so seeing his determination to get revenge was very Interesting. I loved the Characters names in this book as well, Rhapsody Lowe Amairi Camuto, Jason Ray Champion, just to name a few! It seemed to really fit their personality and gave you a great intense visual of what each character looked like and their behavior. Would I read a Science Fiction book again??? Well Yes, But only if Brian Thompson is writing it...Great Job Brian. I even passed this book onto my nephew whom is 15 and he loved every bit of it. So Well Done... Great Read for those wanting to read something different and for teenagers!

By Callmepar Recovering from his injuries after saving the world by absorbing radiation, Jason Champion Jr. is still in danger. Betrayed by his ex-girlfriend, hunted by the Collective, a group of near immortals, and his evil nemesis, the only person Jason can count on is his best friend Rhapsody, who has become his girl friend. Jason battles his ADHD, worries about saving his step mother and brother, and if that isn't enough, he has to save the world--again. I had a couple of questions about the story and was pleased to find out there will be a book 4. Mr. Thompson has created characters so three dimensional that their superpowers seem believable. The teen angst is spot on and as a reader you ride the rollercoaster of emotions with him. There is a sentimental occurrence that I don't want to spoil for other readers. Suffice it to say, I highly recommend the Reject High series and Forgotten was my favorite of the series so far.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent as always By William Woodall For me, Forgotten was probably the most interesting book in this series (so far at least). That's not to say that the others weren't as good, because all three of these books have been excellent adventure stories. It's just that this one strikes me as a deeper story with more food for thought, and that was something I really liked. If it turns out that additional books are written in the future, I'd be interested to read them as well.Like the rest of this series, Forgotten is a good choice for the teenaged reader who enjoys adventure and superhero books. In certain ways it reminded me of the Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon, although of course the details are quite different. I congratulate the author on a job well done!

Terror attack, Catastrophe, Eviction – all hinging on just one thing: the decryption of an impenetrable code being used by a foreign terror organization to co-ordinate a large-scale terror attack in Bangalore, India on the first of January, 2015. Desperate to outrun time and avert the attack, the DXA—a specialized anti-terror division of the Indian Intelligence Services—holds a gun, literally, to Avanti’s head to get her to crack the code. Desperate to escape a darkly painful past and a dreadfully messy present, she is left with no other choice but to comply. But does the near-linguist Avanti—born and bred in Cameroon, Africa, and eking out a living by teaching French in Bangalore— have it in her to render the astonishing services being demanded of her? A tale of how an ordinary life turns extraordinary in the span of one fraught fortnight – that fortnight before dawn. The tale with a scorpion’s sting in its tail...

I ended up glued to the e-book By krubha I chanced to notice this e-book from Amazon, in GoodReads, of a new Indian author, that promised to be a thriller. Thought I will try, ready to abandon in case it doesn't make a good read. I ended up glued to the e-book, and every moment I was free, I spent with Avanti, the protagonist. The very beginning was riveting and full of promises. Contrary to what is expected out of a woman writer, the genre, the field that is more convenient and comfortable, Bhamini delivers a lovely punch full of surprise.Subtle humor, more realistic characterization, no unnecessary mince up of words and good detailing are the plus. It's very well written, though somewhere down the narrative, it seems like a regular spiced up movie, it nevertheless does not reduce the reader’s interest and keeps her intrigued. The book was well paced, so nicely written, that the final few pages explaining the twist were interesting to read too. I have suggested the book to a few friends, and very much looking forward to reading more from the author.

And picks up speed as you go along. It ends on a strong note; and like a seasoned writer, there are enough hooks for a sequel.First of the language. Having grown up reading James Hadley Chase, often wondered how an Indian author would approach it. Bhamini just nailed it. She blended contemporary usage into her writing. The way she frames her phrases, can't stop smiling and keep wondering whether the author thinks in Kannada or Tamil or perhaps, Hindi. Never a dull moment. Humor is subtle, romance is subtle and action is subtle.Next the plot. Quite a complicated plot but easy to comprehend, since it picks up speed slowly. The turns are smoothened. There are just the right number of characters; so not too many names to deal with. Finally, the authenticity. Five stars are for that. Bhamini put the linguist in her to good use. Nice small details about languages are shared and how that leads to communications between unsavory characters of the world. The whole aspect of breaking apart an artificial language to comprehend the terrorist plot is very nicely dealt with. The research done into the way software for deciphering languages could work, the inner workings of a counter terrorism organization and the travails of the agents ... all point to the background work done to make this book a reality.Read it. And imagine who could play whom, if this were to be a movie.

I guess I never thought of terror/crime/thriller as my genre, but this book was totally readable. I enjoyed it in one go, on a long flight, and the characters grew on me. Avanti, the free spirited African expat turned reserved French teacher, seemed to me like a character that the author has very personally and intimately crafted, and that loving-ness comes across while reading the book. I enjoyed the contextual African parts to the book. The climactic code cracking, though, was a bit underwhelming. There are parts that almost go the cheesy Mills-and-Boone-esque route, but stop just short of it. So in that sense, there was a bit of conflict for me, in deciding whether I thought the cop guy was my mother's generation's hero - cocky and overbearing, or if he was actually of our times - confident and knowledgeable, if a bit eccentric.Overall, I think this was an entertaining book, perfect for a flight reading, and a commendable first for the author.

There are some of us now reaching middle age who discover themselves to be lamenting the past in one respect if in none other, that there are no books written now for children comparable with those of thirty years ago. I say written FOR children because the new psychological business of writing ABOUT them as though they were small pills or hatched in some especially scientific method is extremely popular today.

The Story of Doctor Dolittle, by Hugh Lofting

Amazon.com Review Listening to Alan Bennett read The Story of Doctor Dolittle is the next best thing to borrowing someone's kindly British grandfather for a marathon round of bedtime stories. Bennett seems to have an unlimited supply of voices, accents, and inflections on the ready, which he calls upon to impart each of Doctor Dolittle's animal companions with a distinct personality and voice.

Bennett's reading of the classic children's book is deliciously whimsical. As the tale opens, Dr. John Dolittle is on the verge of the realization that he's just not much good as a people doctor--his earnings have dwindled to a paltry sixpence a year. He takes the advice of his creaky-voiced 183-year-old parrot, Polynesia, and learns animal languages. As an animal doctor, he's brilliant and soon finds himself and his animal friends sailing to Africa to treat an epidemic among monkeys. With no trouble at all, Doctor Dolittle cures the monkeys, but he and his menagerie become embroiled in one adventure after another. They narrowly escape sinking in their leaky ship, thanks to some stowaway rats with surprisingly cultured and well-bred diction, who alert the doctor just in time. The doctor and his friends later run afoul of the Barbary pirates, known to be "a bad lot," for whom Bennett devises a hilariously unidentifiable but thoroughly villainous accent. With the help of some fast-talking (and hungry) sharks, Doctor Dolittle "persuades" the pirates they'd be much better off as birdseed farmers.

The adventures are exciting, but not frightening. Bennett's reassuring voice and the fact that the doctor always forges a peaceful solution to each predicament make the recording appropriate for small children. Adults, too, will find the stories appealing and are certain to appreciate the understated social satire occasionally voiced by the perceptive animals. The reading is rounded out by delightful orchestral selections from Camille Saint-Saëns's "Carnival of the Animals," which signal the beginning and end of each tape side. (Running time: 150 minutes, two cassettes) --Elizabeth Laskey

However I would like to warn modern readers, that the full version of this book is Racist. So the Editors have carefully changed the story of the African Chief who wished to become Cacausion in appearance to one where he wishes to become a lion. Now, I agree that the story is better this way, but mucking around with books after the author is dead and can't defend or fix them is right out. So in that vein I can't recommend this edition of this book. The editors should have changed the title to "The Modern Dr. Dolittle" or some other name which implies that the story isn't the orginal. They do it all the time with the bible, "King James Ed.", "Good News for Modern Man" etc.If you are going to read to children, books which treat people unfairly you should take the time explain why this was a poor idea even in its day. Or not read them at all. Or own up to the fact that you've changed the story. On the plus side the illustrations are great, M. Hague is a great artist.

Recently I read the new edition illustrated by Michael Hague. This new edition is terrific. The revisions are obvious to one who read the original work, but they are sensible and reflect Lofting's intentions while reflecting modern thought. Hague's illustrations are beautiful. I would still recommend that older children and adults read the original, to learn a bit about Lofting's time and because the author's illustrations are wonderfully simplistic. This is also a good read-aloud for younger children, because many, when they are able to read it for themselves, will unfortunately have lost interest in such a fanciful story.

I highly recommend this version with only a slight reservation (see below) because its illustration and editing would make an excellent introduction to children as well as a gift possibility and a lifelong keepsake.I heartily disagree with the reviewer who discredits this edition because it has been updated to modern civilities. The reviewer mistakenly suggests that the edition conceals that changes have been made. To the contrary, the foreword fully describes the editors' concerns for literary sensitivities as they made changes. If your purpose is to collect unabridged books, do shop elsewhere. But if you share my intent of introducing this wonderful story to children, this book serves the purpose very well. There is minimal distraction from unnecessary anachronisms.I think this edition would serve children well through elementary school. I would nominate unabridged editions for older children to help teach them about society's changing attitudes towards racism. My slight reservation (mentioned above) about this edition is that racial stereotypes do persist. In Africa, the (white) doctor is referred as "the good man" while the African king is unjust, his son is goofy, and both the king and his son are easily fooled. These characterizations ARE unavoidable without drastically changing the storyline. However, the story explains the motivation for the king's injustice and is a worthy point of discussion with a young reader.
